View Full Version : Engine Ticking Sound In Cold Temperatures
RamTech 02-20-2010, 08:25 AM SUBJECT: RAPID RESPONSE TRANSMITTAL / SERVICE ACTION #10-009
Engine Ticking Sound In Cold Temperatures
INVOLVED VEHICLES:2009 (DC) Ram Truck (3500 Chassis Cab) (Includes International Markets)
2009 (DH) Ram Truck (1500/2500 Pick Up) (Includes International Markets)
2009 (DS) Ram Truck (1500) (Includes International Markets)
2009 (DX) Ram Truck (Mexico) (Includes International Markets)
NOTE: This Service Action affects both sold and unsold vehicles.
DISCUSSION:
A number of models built before August 14, 2009 (MDH 0814XX) equipped with a 5.7L
engine (Sales code EZC or EZD or EZH) may have been built with an engine that may
emit a ticking sound heard at start-up in cold ambient temperatures. This sound could
be less noticeable as the engine warms to normal operating temperature. This condition may be caused by broken or loose manifold bolts for cylinders # 7 and # 8.
Dealers are required to replace both sets of exhaust manifold bolts for cylinders # 7 and # 8 with new stainless steel higher strength bolts.
MightyBlueRam 02-20-2010, 08:58 AM Wow finally there's an official answer to the ticking question. I remember one of the members a while back had videos of the ticking on his truck and he wasn't getting anywhere finding out the reason. I wonder if he's still on the site.
Once again, thanks for the great information Randy.
RamTech 02-20-2010, 09:02 AM I was wondering the same thing myself. They just released this one 2 days ago.

MADDOG 02-20-2010, 10:48 AM Thanks, Randy.
This is just for 2009 trucks, eh? Darn...my 2007 ticks a lot!
CdnoilRAM 02-20-2010, 02:38 PM Glad to have ya on here Randy, getting us all the inside scoop.
GTyankee 02-20-2010, 06:21 PM I have noticed some ticking noises, (not too loud,) at start up. it doesn't really get below 32F here much.
i hope that i don't have that problem, the dealership has pulled my intake once already & replaced the short runner valve, think that is when my radiator got damaged, it was replaced after i.. err b*tched about it
i see mine is:
body model code DS1H41
engine EZD 5.7 V8 HEMI MDS VVT
transmission DGQ 5-spd automatic 545RFE

iRESQu 02-22-2010, 01:03 PM WOW, thanks again, Randy! We appreciate you and your knowledge/insight!
GTyankee 02-22-2010, 01:27 PM LadyRam, i found the information on my window sticker, they had put it in my glove compartment, when they detailed it at the dealer & I asked the parts dept. to print out exactly what i had on the trucks build sheet
what i have not been able to figure out is, on the window sticker it reads
Engine: 5.7-Liter V8 HEMI(R) MDS VCT Engine but on the print out that i got from the parts counter, it reads
Engine: EZD 5.7L V8 HEMI MDS VVT Engine, seems crazy to me
RamTech 02-22-2010, 01:52 PM For reasons I don't understand, they sometimes refer to VVT as VCT.

Positive. A "Hemi tick" is normal. The RRT is a different matter.
davey dodge 03-12-2010, 04:20 PM I have a 2004 but the exhaust manifolds are pretty rusted up. The guy I bought it from did not take very good care of it. If it is leaking that would make sense. Thanks for the info.:smiley_thumbs_up:
bones64 03-12-2010, 07:14 PM Cheers Randy. Great info for everyone.
eltoro2 08-29-2010, 11:47 AM i have ticking noise took to dealer they said my bolts were replaced in exhust , still have tick . on my 09 . i think it's a valve sound like it to me .
Silver Eagle 09-01-2010, 11:41 AM Does this apply to the 04 Dodge Ram 1500 as well,Mine has been ticking ever since I bought it. The dealars say not to worry about it.
RamTech 09-05-2010, 11:01 AM Yes, it applies to yours as well.
GTyankee 09-05-2010, 03:58 PM the dealerships are still not getting the kits in enough numbers to count, maybe 2 kits a week are now coming in, mine are still on back order & i have been at the dealership twice in the last week, both times i had different service writers & both mentioned the new TSB.
when they call me to let me know that mine are in, i will also be getting my 30,000 tune up & fuel system service.
i should order a CATCH CAN & have that installed at the same time, the guys at my dealership are interested in how good they are & how the mounting sits
