Hey just wanted to confer with you guys and see if you come to the same conclusion I did. had my truck a couple weeks now, it was raining pretty good so I decided to turn the heat on for the first time, and poof all this smoke like shit comes out of the defrost vents smells like coolant. and i spent another 15 mins cleaning the film off of the winshield. sound like a heater core problem to you guys? the coolant was also down about a litre or so when I bought it. If so how big of a job is it?
I don't have an answer to your question, but Randy (Remerson228) is the man on here who would be able to help. The only experience I have with doing a heater core was my '81 Ram. I didn't have the same symptom as you, mine was actually leaking on the passenger side floor board, and even at that, I'm far from qualified to be of any real help, but hopefully Randy will see this post in the morning. Good luck though and be sure to keep us posted.
It's probably faster and easier to replace the engine.
To the best of my knowledge, your looking at -
- complete dash removal
- drain cooling system
- Drain A/C (refrigerant)
- complete removal of air box
If you do this, you might as well inspect/replace/repair the air flaps in the air box while you have it out. These doors are a weak link in the HVAC system, and are second only to the heater core for assess difficulty.
Good Luck!
I'm hoping that Randy can offer some better news or suggestions that simplify or ease the pain, but it is my understanding that this is the part they started with, and built the truck around it. :Wow1:

It is a big job . I would recommend while your in there to go ahead and replace the evaporator core also for your A/C . You don't want to do this again .
Well I got it apart right now and.... sure as shit heater core leaking like a siv. So why in the world would dodge make those tubes turn? That has to be the dumbest thing I have seen in my life! just so it would fit in a box nice? I am tempted to just JB weld the suckers in place so I don't have to worry about whatever seal is in there going at a later date.
So why in the world would dodge make those tubes turn? I'm not sure what your talking about . I know that on the aftermarket there are heater cores designed like that for easier installation . I wonder if the heater core hasn't been done already .
