Ok Thank you , not sure why it happened but I'm going to find out. I do work on my own vehicles but not a mechanic . I've been looking for info on the diff. not found alot. Would like to have a blowup view and such.
Sounds like something in the drive train broke. Either the transfer case, and axle or the front diff, maybe both or all three. 'Bout the only thing you can do at this point is, if you're handy with a wrench, start taking them apart and see how much damage was done and what can be salvaged and what needs to be replaced. If your not handy with a wrench, take it to a shop and plan on spending some time and cash on your beast.
I need to get my truck back on the road. I was turning into a parking spot in a parking lot ,had 4x4 on .Something went and sounding like some blew apart, so took 4x4 off and checked 2 wheel drive worked ok. Drove home then to work and when I went to leave work it sounded as bad when it broke, stopped and parked it , until could get towed home. When we were towing it in neutral it made the same noise . So I figured in neutral ,transmission disengaged , out of 4 wheel drive transfer case disengaged . So the only thing left would be front differential which would still move in neutral, the sound when it went came from the front end . So I'm trying to take out right front axle and noticed the splines on the short shafted are pretty much smooth , so when I get axle out I'm going to turn the short shaft and see what I can hear. I'm thinking I'll have to replace or rebuilt the front diff. So can I have your opinion on what happened or need to be done.
