I'm not aware of any ground issues that are any more common in 3rd gens than any other but I am familiar with the tap the starter trick lol, used to keep a hammer on the floorboard of my Jeep just for that purpose until I could replace my starter. Most auto parts stores, we can test the starter on the vehicle or put it on the machine and bench test it in the store but sounds like it may be time to replace it. Hey there Dave. P0171 is bank 1 system lean. It could be something as simple as unplugging the sensor and plugging it back in to the sensor actually being faulty and needing replaced. A fuel injector problem or vacuum leak could throw that code as well. You probably are getting good fuel pressure but still getting too much air in bank 1 so I'd check the connections to the sensor, check for vacuum leaks or a bad fuel injector. Could also be MAF sensor or intake tube cracked or loose.
