Metal shavings are normal, the gears are helical and they have allot of thrust forces which cause grinding. The benefit is the helical gears have a larger flank area, so they can withstand higher load, and aren't as noisy as straight cut. So, fine powder with the occasional chip of metal is normal, and especially since they are wear mate parts.
