2011 ZF Axle has been beaten....

Some of you know I call Randy's R&P every couple months. Well i just got off the phone with them. They told me about a local shop which I despise, Eastern Offroad who has made it possible. They installed Yukon 4.56s for the non "ZF" Chrysler 9.25 rearend in a customer 2011 dodge ram last month. Randy's told me that they sent the carrier to a local machine shop and had it drilled out to work with the Yukons :rockon:

I just got off the phone with Eastern Offroad. They are going to call me back with more detailed information and pricing. 2011 guys stand by......

To tell you the truth, there is no advantage to the ZF rear ends
except to Chrysler abiding with the fuel mileage goals set by the FEDs
the rear end housing is 40 pounds lighter
on some of the gears, i think the Ring gear is welded on to save the weight of the bolts
this allows Dodge to claim better MPGs, therefore they are meeting the goals

Personally i think 2009 - 2010 rear end is better & stronger, as well as easier to work on

I'm going in Saturday for an install brief. Not really sure on the specs and what their going to do. Sounds like I'm a tester, but I should be the first '11 4x4 with 4.56. On the phone they said their going to install an modified oem lsd carrier with the new 4.56 R&P. I know thats not alot of info, but that's all I have for now. At least it's hope haha

Might be a dumb question but..Do all 2011's have the ZF axles or was this a mid year change?

Can't wait to see how this goes, i could really use a gear upgrade!

Would be curious o see if they can use an aftermarket 2010 carrier...

candy08 01-11-2012 09:03 PM

Im pretty sure all 11s have the ZF rearend.

An aftermarket 2010 carrier cannot be used. An oem 2010 carrier whether open diff or lsd cannot be used. The only thing that will work is a 2011 carrirer. They have done an open diff on a 2wd. Yukon said the 2011 oem modified lsd should be fine, it will just need some more modification to work with the aftermarket gears. Im hoping its fine bc I'll be SOL and have to order an open diff and let them start all over.

As of right now it's going in the shop next Thursday :D

Do you have any info as to what type of differential the ZF LSD is?
I've heard it's a torque sensing type similar to a Detroit True-Trac.

My '12 Express has 3.55 gears with LSD but when both rear wheels are lifted off
the ground and spin one tire the other tire spins in the opposite direction just like a open diff.
The diff definatley behaves like a LSD in that both wheels will spin in dry, wet or variable traction conditions.
