14.88 mpg 1st tank not good.

just check mpg and was disappointed to get 14.88 taking it easy. I wanted to see how good I could do and know I would be down from there. I know corn season is in and I have 3.92 gears but I was told by several people I should get around 17. Any ideas?

If that's all "city" driving that's about right. If it's all "highway" (70mph) then that's a bit low. Keep in mind it will improve as you put the first few thousand miles on the engine. The engine's are now broken in on stands on modern vehicles, but still don't have any real miles on them. Let it get some miles on it and it should improve. Drive it normal, don't baby it and don't beat it while you put those first few thousand on. I would say maybe even drive it a bit aggressively.

I live in rural pa. Not much city driving but not highway at all. Mostly 2 lane clipping at 60,down hill one way and up back. 2010 with 4.7 got 17.5-18.5 consistently without trying. I realize the break in thing but how much does that really change. Would different octane help enough to justify price diff, never tried it in any other vehicle? Any help is appreciated.

If its city driving you can expect 10-11!!! Thats all I get.

Mines been around 15/16 avg and its got 2300 on it. Not sure that they will get better with more miles. Im sure on just highway it would get 17/18. This is my second hemi and no matter how I drove the 04 same MPG 13/14 avg and on the highway 16/17. The 2012 is better but not by much. I was hoping for more.

all the 4th Gen Hemi engines mpg get better with use
I now get 15.8 mpg highway, with my sign up, lights mounted, & my flags whipping in the wind
my Ram weighs 6,000 pounds as it sits in the driveway, 700 pounds over stock weight
I have over 60,000 miles on the Ram now

My mileage got better when i changed to a K&N air filter & synthetic Mobile One
I had about 8,000 miles on the engine when i changed to the K&N

I buck a lot of wind going down the highway & as i said i have the extra weight as well

I got 15.9 on my first tank of 70-percent city driving running on 89 octane fuel.

I'm pretty happy.

I must have a dud!! Local driving will not exceed 12 miles per gallon!!! I get 17 to 18 on the hwy!!

snrusnak 01-27-2012 09:46 PM

89 octane is recommended for the hemi. It will run on 87 but not as good usually. 91 or 93 octane would just be a waste, you should run 89 to get the best performance.

I have been feeling disappointed lately with my 4.7L's mpg of about 17 city and 22 hwy, but after this thread I actually feel pretty good about that...

Mine changed a good bit after the first 500 miles (for the better), and again around 3k seemed like things settled in a bit more after service. Then again, I was looking for power not efficiency, but 16-18 is my norm now with a mix of light urban driving. (89 octane)
