97 1500 4x4 ... what exhaust?

I just purchased a 97 1500 4x4. The truck is VERY loud. I still see factory manifolds and it looks like the rest of it is pretty stock, but it has dual tips coming out under the rear bumper. I like the look of that but I want to redo the exhaust so it actually sounds halfway decent. I want to get new headers for it i know that much. but what else would i need? i still want a deep sound but i want to have at least a little more gas mileage than what i'm getting now (~85 miles to a half tank) what all do i need? how much pipe? what size pipe? never done exhaust work before.

Ask around at a local car cruise night about who someone recomends for custom exhaust work. Look to see the work done, on whoever your asking. have them put on some flowmaster 50's. Next, Get a summit book and order the edelbrock headers...easy bolt on. Just my opinion on a nice sounding Ram. Gas milage...GAS MILAGE? we're not talking GAS MILAGE!!??? Pick a gas station where the employees are courteous, you'll see them a lot :)

Hahaha good point... Thanks for your input! I mean, the truck runs pretty great besides the exhaust.. it has about 262k on it and ive been wondering if im better off to just pull the engine and rebuild it then put the new exhaust on it? It just seems pointless to rebuild it because it runs great! other than the fact that it hesitates when it is in overdrive and youre trying to speed up without giving a lot of gas!
