Tail Trimming? Pics!

I just can't seem to stay away. I've built dozens of rigs and now have a full size Dodge to play with. (1998 V10 Quad Cab 2500 Shortbed)

Want to set it up for a bit of off road use. First up would be to trim the rear corners of the bed before I bend them up.

Would love to see what others have done. I have collected a couple of pics around the net, but want to see more.

I'm really digging that, if you don't mind me asking how much do that set you back?

Just for clarification. None of the above are trucks that I am associated with. Just some pictures I have collected over time.

I've mostly built Jeeps and full size Chevy stuff in the past.

Just picked up my 1998 a few weeks ago and figure its time to start a few mods.

Here is the truck I will be working on. Picked it up for $2,700 (V10 with propane dual fuel, Dana60/80 NV4500)

^that dakota is awesome!

.....and I guess maybe I should have put this in the body mods section. Didn't see it until now. Sorry.

I'm leaning toward a rear set up like the Dakota. Just wanted to see if anyone had done anything different before I started cutting.

^I agree do like that dakota, it's the best looking and gives the most clearance...

The Dakota is super sick, and no worries about posting it in the wrong section we all do it :) I'm curious how would one go about trimming it?

Xtremjeepn 02-23-2012 12:27 PM

The trimming itself should not be that difficult. But I was hoping I would stumble on more pictures.

Couple of thoughts on the trimming.

Probably need to drop the tail gate down and see how much clearance it needs to swing down. The Dakota *Might* have the bottom lip of the gate trimmed too.

This might explain why the two 2nd gens have it trimmed down lower.

Figure out where you want to trim and mark it. Might be good to trim down about 1" then cut some "fins" up to the line you want it trimmed to. Fold back the "fins" and weld them together. This way it would create a lip to add rigidity back to the rear quarter. Could do the trimming itself with a cut off wheel or nibbler with tape over the whole section to not flake the paint.

I have not looked to see if there is a support under there. Most trucks have one. That is pretty simple to cut and reposition to the new higher rear quarter.

I would just cut the quarter off where you want it, then weld a strip of like 1/8" steel behind it and grind the bottom edge smooth. It will make it rigid, get rid of the sharp edge, and be quick/easy. Only downside is you have to them paint...
