Replace the Cats?

So this could be a stupid question, but I had an idea. If I had an exhaust shop replace the mid pipes that had the stock cats with straight pipes, would I see a hp/mpg gain?

Also, I know that when you get LT that there is CEL problems, if you had the stock 02 sensors installed in this new straight pipe, just as they would be set up in the stock pipe, would you still have problems?

Finally, would removing your cats cause any kinda problem as far as making the motor run too rich or lean?

I think removing the cats would rob your low end power due to no back pressure I would just go with some hi-flows

there would be a performance change as the flow would be more unrestrictive (just don't straight pipe all the way through (have a muffler). this should also improve gas mileage (it did for me)

you would still need to do the plug fouler mod which pulls the o2 sensor out of the jetway and stuff steel wool in it.

so you stuff steel wool between the two foolers?

I added 0000 wool to my non foulers and cats code free for 20k+ miles.

I understand I'd have to do this mod for both of my cats but would i have to do it for both plugs on each cat? It looks like i have one before and after on my cats.

just both rear 02's.

chefred112 04-28-2012 11:29 AM

agreed, rear only..you will jack up your motor if you do this on the front o2 sensors..
