Tail gate load
 
What is the maximum load that can be applied to an open tail gate?

I'm not sure about Dodge as I've only owned one for about 2 months, but on my previous Fords the general rule if memory serves was 500 pounds.

i do not know the true answer. but i do know that it depends on the type of load. if you throw a 500 lbs rock on your tailgate it will surely cave in. if you have a 1000lbs palate of bricks on the tail gate and slide it in the bed im sure it will be ok.

The tailgate isn't the weak point, it's the gate straps. It can probably hold at least 1000 lb between the two straps, but 500 lb is a much safer number. Riding my almost 400 lb motorcycle (plus my 220 lb self) up on the gate doesn't ever feel unsafe or shaky, just for reference.

Higher quality cables or plate hinges like Yankee mentioned would help, but I wonder if there's any issue about the integrity of the tailgate itself? I'm not talking about the cables or hinge plates failing and dropping the load...just curious if the tailgate has some kind of crush or bending potential. Weren't there some pics recently of some Tundra pickups with buckled tailgates that weren't cable or hinge related? I didn't start this post, and I'm not personally all that concerned about failure of either the cables or the tailgate frame itself. I don't think I'll be overloading mine to a failure point. I have belonged to an off road club for over 30 years, and I've seen friends load all manner of vehicles into the backs of their pickups...ATVs, UTVs, big road hog motorcycles, etc. The only damage I've ever seen occur was when someone got a little rambunctios and hit the front end of the pickup bed, denting it or even denting the cab...or breaking the back window...LOL! I once loaded my '83 Honda Goldwing into the back of my '88 Chevy S10 longbed pickup. The tailgate had linkage plates instead of cables, however. As long as the tailgate cables are not damaged, maybe this is an overstated concern?

I would think the tailgate metal would probably take like 4 times the weight as compared to the cables, before becoming compromised.
