I think I just got Fram'd.....

I have a '97 1500 2WD... old truck that Ive owned for about a year.

The PO wasn't very good on maintenance from what I can see... lots of stuff boogered up or just plain ignored.... dirty oil, lack of suspension lube. This guy was a mechanic (or so he sez) so that may be part of the problem!:shy:

Anywho... I have driven this 235K truck about 8,000 miles since I bought it... and it has been bulletproof for the most part. I've done about 5 oil changes on it since I'm trying to get the engine a little cleaner to clear up a lifter tick... and that seems to have worked... the engine is now very quiet.

The last time I did an oil change, maybe December, I found an old Fram oil filter sitting on the back of a shelf that I didn't know I had.. I'm no fan of Fram but I have used many in the past without any issues. I had two new NAPA Gold's on the shelf, too but I thought I'd use the Fram, just to get it out of my hair.

So I changed the oil, screwed on the Fram, replacing a MOPAR filter, and filled the pan with fresh 15W40 diesel oil that I buy from my local fram store (made by CITGO).

Tonite I was in my shop finishing a total ball joint replacement deal that's been on the sidelines now for about 3 weeks. I got as far as I could but decided, at the last moment, to drain the oil overnight and finish up everything in the AM.

To my surprise, I dumped the oil and it came out COPPER color... well, actually black with TONS of copper in the oil. Never had any metal in the oil that I could see before....

Things don't look too encouraging right now!

So you're saying the filter came apart?

No... but I got a start up rattle after I changed the filter which stayed... never had that before. Nothing else changed from my last oil change other than the Fram filter. Oil pressure seemed to be OK... didn't really notice any difference

When I worked at a Ford store in the 90's Fram filters had a reputation for causing that start-up rattle on the Ford engines... we replaced literally dozens with Motorcraft filters and the rattle stopped.

I realize this is a high mileage engine... and I've been around this stuff for 50+ years... I'm not one to jump to conclusions. But it's pretty weird to see that much copper in the oil after about 1,000 miles... it looked like I was panning for gold!

I'll know more after I cut the filter apart... in a few days.

I just don't understand where the copper came from?

I also don't like fram.

A couple of interesting reads on Fram filters. Take from both of them what you will.

I use fram for years now. They got all of my cars over 100+ and in one case 200+. Now my last oil change I used an off brand the first week of use the oil looked like I put 3000 miles on it. So everyone has there thing. I like the orange can until I find something else that will keep it clean as long

Engine bearings....

copper is used in the crank shaft bearings, called inserts

from a car pros website
You can also look at the engine oil in the sunlight or a bright light and look for specs of metal. If you see little silver pieces of metal it is going to need a rebuild in a while. If you see Brass or Copper colored pieces in the oiol it needs a rebuild now. The metal will settle out in the bottom of the oil.

I was going to cut open that Fram filter and see what it looks like... and I have been letting a few ounces of the old oil settle so I can see if there's much copper in the bottom of the container.

Wanted to get that done today but I worked most of the afternoon installing new ball joints on the right side and reassembling the front end. I cut 1 1/2 coils out of the front springs to see how much it dropped the front end... I did an axle flip a few weeks ago and now it looks pretty good... but I still have to repaint the truck and reinstall the box.

If I have to pull the pan it looks to be a pretty easy job... small favors....

Oh yeah... after I got the front end back together I wanted to bleed the brakes but the darn engine wouldn't start! Got an ex-MOPAR wrench coming over so we can scan it for codes... I have a feeling I have a few (no cat for one). I DID get it running after awhile... had to crank it with the pedal to the floor to get it to start.

Been a while...

I dumped the Fram filter and put on a NAPA Gold and that got rid of the start up rattle...

No more copper in the oil after a couple more changes either....
