I have noticed with the tow button on the rpm's jump up. I know this is to make towing easier and more responsive. But is it worth the drop in MPG's? If you leave it off and manualy shift into a lower gear if needed. Would you get better MPG's while towing? I've towed my travel trailer twice since I bought this truck and when going over big hills/mountains it tows better with it on but appears that the MPG's are not nearly as good. Over smaller hills or what I call a "flat West Virginia road" I don't see much of a difference other than the real time MPG gauge. How many of you leave it on the complete time your towing.
BTW my the TT is probably around 6k when loaded down.

It really isn't good for your transmission to leave it in overdrive when towing heavy. Its better for the rig to be at higher revs/lower gear ratio, than to be at lower rev's and a higher gear ratio. Your trans heats up REALLY fast in OD with 6k on the ass end.

My TT is 7000 (gvwr) 4800 empty and when towing it I leave the tow/haul on. I'd rather pay for extra gas over burning up the trans and it sitting at the dealer for who knows how long. I need my truck. When pulling my 6x12 enclosed motorcycle trailer thats 3250 (gvwr) I dont need the tow/haul.

My advise would be to use the tow/haul when you're pulling the amount of weight you are.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I never really thought about the load it puts on the transmission. That makes sense. Guess I'll dish out the extra few dollars to keep the truck out of the garage.

I leave it in tow/haul any time I'm towing or even hauling a decent load. Towing my 10K kills the mileage but we gotta keep the tranny happy

So I'm wondering if I should be using it or not. I have a 2010 CCSB Sport with 3.55's, 2WD. I'm pulling roughly 3,000 lbs (1,500lb boat, 600lb motor, 300lbs gas, trailer, gear and other things).

Should I be using the Tow/Haul button for a bass boat? It's a 20" Skeeter with a Yamaha 200 VMax. I'm pulling it 250 miles today, I average around 20-22 MPG without anything so far I'm doing around 12-13 with the boat in Tow Haul mode.

Should I just watch transmission temp gauge and play it by ear?

That is pretty light, i don't believe the Ram will even know it is there, unless you are pulling a long hill

I can definitely feel it, but the truck doesn't seem to struggle much. I think I more feel the surge brakes from the trailer trying to outrun me going down hills than anything.

Taking it from Hot Springs AR, to Tulsa OK over the weekend. Heading to lake Tenkiller Saturday, should be a fun weekend.

I would use tow/haul. But heck, if I have >500lbs. in the bed I use tow haul too :)

A few bucks in gas over a (potential) hurt tranny.....
