Crappy Dash Plastic!!!!

So I went to remove my dash bezel around the gauges last night on my '98 Ram. Needed to get the number off the radio so I can look for a replacement. My upper dash is cracked, but the gauge bezel was not....well it is now...

I did not break it taking it off, was super careful. I was putting it back on and lightly pushing below the radio and suddenly a crack appeared in the upper right corner. Amazing, was not touching anywhere near there! I was not twisting the bezel or anything!

It gets better...I was just SICK that it cracked, especially since my truck has the nice wood-faced bezel and they are harder to find. I pulled the bezel back off and attempted to epoxy the crack from the backside and while pressing the crack together while the epoxy bonded, another crack appeared below my hand! I WAS NOT pressing hard! What are these, made of thin glass???

I gotta say I took the face bezels on and off of my 90's era Suburbans numerous times, have owned three Burbs, and NEVER had something like this happen. Was GM's plastic that much better than Chrysler's???

I got the bezel back on and the carpet cover hides most of the crack, but still, this just makes me so mad. That is the crappiest plastic I've ever dealt with.

Rant over.

Plastic gets brittle after awhile especially with the sun on it. I would recommend getting a dash cover.

They all for the most part are brittle. You can buy new ones that are tougher then stock although I hope your not attatched to the wood grain. I've never untll I saw your pics seen wood grain.

So far the crack is just on the outside edge around the wood...and I've got it covered with the carpet cover. I hope the crack doesn't spread into the wood....I like the wood, like you said, it's an uncommon option.

Different companies make different bezels & caps for your dash
some are the top of the dash & others are for the face of your dash

you can even order from some companies, the BURL wood finish, some you apply that part yourself

this company shows what is available, but they are the OEM parts & might crack again quickly

some companies just make an overlay that you put on with adhesive

this company carries both the cap type & replacement type, using modern day ABS plastic, not fiberglas

That's a bummer man I've owned two second gens, a 99 and a 00, and I've been ripping my dash off on my 00 the past month more than I care to admit, and no issues. Mabye its that wood grained option. Mabye try adding a layer of something on the inside to strengthen it. Cheap option .... duct tape haha

The dash cover hides it pretty well.
