play in steering
well llast week I replaced an outer tie rod on the passengers side and a sway bar link on the drivers side because they both had play in them got an alignment and hoped that solved my issues. The steering wheel feels tight on smooth road but on rough roads the wheels seem to have some play versus the steering wheel or vice versa. with te truck off and in park you can here a "clunk" of sopme sort when you turn the wheel back and forth (not turning very far just a bit back and forth).
Had my gf do it while I crawled under the truck, the clunk is even louder under the truck coming from the area of the rack. hard to tell if it does it when the truck is on and the steering is free because the engine is too loud underneath to hear whats going on.... 1500 bucks in the last 2 months and 2 alignments on the fawkin truck... I am starting to spend alot of time browsing on the cummins forum and suddenly a brand new truck seems pretty appealing. I know this is just regular maintainence but fawk me am I getting annoyed. Truck is going in again on thursday to get checked and I dont know a whole lot about this shit yet.
Any one have any thoughts??
EDIT: truck rides pretty good on smooth hwy, straight as an arrow. I guess front end replacement is a common thing when you liove in a city that consistently year after year is voted to have the worst roads in Canada. most of you would puke if you saw the roads here and knew what the taxes in town were
bit of a rant but if anyone has an idea if it could be the rack or not that would be great. I only have 1 week left before I have to drive the truck half way across Canada and in the middle of no where for most of it
for anyone looking now, I got the truck checked and need a new rack and pinion, I wanted to avoid getting my 3rd alignment in 3 months and piling more money into this truck but oh well, the rack would have lasted a little while longer but I wasnt chancing it driving to the middle of no where in Mantioba a week from tomorrow. Hopefully this finally cures my play in the steering and clunking in the steering also. Hopefully this is the last bit of money I have to dump in this thing before I buy a cummins as well LOL
