360 computer on the 318

so i was talking to a "mopar expert" and we where talking about computers. he told me that i could use a computer off of a 360 on my 318 and it would work better than the performance one from mopar. has anybody tried this or know of anybody that did?

The 360 ECM will work on the 318 provided you are using a ECM from the same generation. Now in terms of performance you will have a benefit because of the fuel map and the cam that is in the 5.9L, the 5.2L cam is better in terms of lift but the 5.9L has better duration. The MP ECM is the best choice because it's completely unlocked you can program the hell out of it, a stock 360 ECM has restrictions. Not saying you cannot program a stock 360 ECM but the performance one isn't going to limit you quite as much. The thing about the ECM is the EPROM holds the calibration so provided you can remove the chip and write programs you can modifiy the stock ECM but it's just not very practical.

The worst part about the ECM is you can spend thousands on the engine but you won't take full advantage with the stock ECM that's speaking if the ECM accepts what you do to the engine.

Depends on what you mean by "better". Simply using a 360 computer on a stock 318 is pointless. The stock 360 computer on a modified 318 will give you plenty of room in the stock programming to provide better fuel curves for the higher requirements on a modded 318 while retaining milder ignition timing to maintain minimal fuel octane requirements, which is where the "no towing" issue comes in on the MP aftermarket units. If you want more ignition timing, the aftermarket unit has a few more degrees dialed in, and you will need higher octane fuel, meaning premium. I'd tend to agree that for a modded 318 in street duty, possibly towing duty, the 360 computer would be better. For max effort modded 318, premium fuel road & track duty/no towing, the MP unit would be better.

Ok so what I'm understanding from this is if i go to the junkyard and get an ecm from a 2001 360 and pit it in my 2001 318 it is just going to plug and go no problems? and would give me better performance as i do light mods?

On the OBDII units it's really not an issue. They can be re-programmed for your specific mods. The stocker will adapt to mild mods. No need to use a 360 unit. The bigger 360 on a 318 deal was really the only way to go with earlier OBDI units (pre-1996).
