?camera overhead

Near switches for rear power window, overhead console in front, is a ?camera or microphone. Which is it?

Hex 05-17-2012 03:17 PM

There's no camera up there, there is a green map light, the other hole with no light coming out of it is the microphone. Is that what you're asking about?

GTyankee 05-17-2012 04:02 PM

I don't know about a microphone, i believe mine is in the rear view mirror

Up in my overhead console, there is the green ASH TRAY LIGHT
2 map & interior lights
the 3 homelink buttons
i believe the other thing is a light sensor, if a vehicle comes up behind you at night, the headlights reflect off the mirror to the light sensor, when that happens, the sensor sends a message to the little motor behind the mirror & it rotates slightly down, there by reducing the glare.
On old mirrors, there was a little lever at the bottom of the rear view mirror that did it manually, before that was invented, we had to turn the whole mirror down by hand to do the same thing

Well now I'm confused. I had to go out to my truck to do some searching. That indent in front of the middle homelink button, I thought that was the microphone, I was wrong. but it's not the green map light, and it's facing the wrong way to be connected to the rear view mirror. I beleive the light sensors for the auto dimmer are on the mirror, on either side of the power button.

So, the question remains, what is the indent in between the middle homelink button and the rear power window button?

And where is the uconnect microphone?

HeHe, Big brother's watching ya.
If you have a factory installed Uconnect system, the mic should be in the rear view mirror. If it's a Mopar accessory install, then the mic should be on the drivers "A" pillar for a proper install, however depending on the person who did the install it could be on the dash somewhere between the radio bezel and the drivers side end of the dash. (bad location)

Interesting. Reason I asked is my stereo installer thought at first it was a microphone but now thinks it's a camera and doesn't know what it's for. Yes I am paranoid but is this part of the black box system so that when you get in an accident and they need the info they find what you were doing when it happened? Don't mean to be paranoid but..I'm paranoid.

Well, of course it is. It's so the insurance companies can tell if you were drinking and driving, watching DVDs, getting a little passenger love, texting while driving, using the phone handset instead of the hands free system, even just eating a burger or whatever. It's also tied into the anti theft system, when someone tries to steal the truck, their picture is taken and sent thru the black box wireless network to the local 911 department for further identification. This is a way to help bring insurance cost down for them and for customers that have to pay for accidents they don't get into or fraudulent insurance claims.
This is also a legal way to track drug dealers. There is an air sniffer that has been modeled after the smelling sensory glands of a dog. It can pick up the scent of 99.9% of the drugs available. When it senses the drugs, your picture is taken along with the longitude and latitude coordinates of your location and sent to the local 911 department thru the vehicle wireless system. Don't try to disconnect it, there is a sensor on the trim panel that will take a snapshot of your trying to remove it and that is a federal crime, worthy of 3-7 years in a federal prison.

But really, if your installer is totally curious about it, have him take the bezel down and unplug the camera while wearing a mask and you could tell the feds that someone was trying to steal the truck.

 Awesome response. This makes total sense. I wondered why my 2011 truck was made is 1984 (orwellian reference for the reading impared...)

I think that sensor has something to do with the homelink system. The instructions say to point your garage door remote at the overhead console while holding down one of the homelink buttons. I think the sensor there picks up the frequency of the garage door opener and programs it into the homelink buttons. Just a hunch.

hmm, must be some residual leftovers from the 70's - the 90's cause there hasn't been any in over a decade. Sometimes I don't know if that's a good thing or not.
