Pitting in the water pump housing?
I have damage inside my water pump housing and wondered if anyone else has had this issue? Originally I thought it was damage caused by a failed water pump but it looks more like a microbial or acid attack that is actually eating away the housing. I found some more pitting in the thermostat bypass gallery as well.
Shortly after I purchased the truck I had to replace both the heater core and the main radiator because they were full of pinholes so it's pretty likely that whatever was in the cooling system was causing damage. I only hope that It is now under control.
I had the motor out doing some other work so I replaced the housing but can't help but wonder if I have it solved or if my new housing is at risk as well.?.?.?
Certain antifreeze reacts with aluminum and over time will do this corrosion. I've seen impellers eat to the size of dimes. This why flushing and changing coolant is so important as well as using manufacturer recommended coolant.
