Virginia Personal Property Tax Question
I am hoping one of you Virginia members can help me out here...
I just bought a new Ram 3500 SRW and it has truck licence plate tags. The truck is not used for commercial purposes, just personal use. Am I going to get any relief with the personal property tax credit or am I hosed? I see a lot of 1/2 tons, 3/4 tons, and 1 ton vehicles driving around here with regular plates, as well as lots with truck plates. I am finding hit and miss stuff on the web relating to not getting tax relief if you have the truck plates, but nothing definate. Can anyone help me out here and let me know if they have encountered any of this in Virginia? Thanks
Since it's not being used for business, and therefore no business tax filing, I'd dump the truck tags for generic va plates. They base the tax on the type of vehicle and on GVWR (weight) so having a dedicated truck tag is not worth the fee if you can't claim it back.
When I bought my 97 12v ECLB 5spd 3500 dually, I was told it HAD to have truck plates, even though it was for private use only, because its empty weight was more than is allowed for the generic VA plates that give you the tax break.
There is no way legally to put anything on it but truck plates.
Those you see with regular plates on them are not legal.
When I got mine, it had regular plates on it, but it was because the previous owner lied about the weight to get them. I took me a couple of visits to DMV and the weigh station to get it all straightened out and properly registered so I could drive it and tow my GN trailer.
