1997 Ram towing question
I have a 1997 Ram 1500 5.9L gas, automatic, 2WD. The hitch bolted to the frame has no markings on it at all and the tounge part is cold welded rusted into place. I even tried a torch to remove it along with a 12lb sledge. Anyway, this set up appears to be solid. I have had the transmission replaced with a used unit, runs great and is under warranty by AAMCO. The engine is making good power for 149000 miles. Water pump, power steering and alternator replaced, al front end steering components replaced as well. So, my towing question is this... I have a Dodge Challenger show car that I need to trailer up to Ohio for the Mopar Nationals next month. The car weighs about 4200lbs, the trailer (if I can find one to rent) will only add to that weight. Will this truck tow this combination? U-Haul will not even talk to me about towing with this truck.

I have a 97 Ram 1500 4x4 5.9 and a 18' tandem axle car trailer that i pull a '68 dart drag car that weighs 3215lbs w/o me in it. I have no problem pulling it at 60-65mph, but now do you have a trans cooler? If not then invest in one, I have mine set up in tandem with the radiator where the exit of the radiator goes to the inlet of the cooler mounted in front of the radiator. And NEVER tow with the overdrive on! That will be the quickest way to test your AAMCO warranty. Other than that try to put the car twards the rear of the trailer so you dont overload the suspension and you'll be good to go.

He's right. I towed a 24 ft tandem axle with a 01 cavi with a 5.2 had no issue the only worry I had was I was useing the bumper hitch not a tow bar.

Any recomendations on the aux trans cooler? I also need to do a brake system check. Stopping this mess will be just as important as getting it moving.

Well an aux cooler won't hurt with auto. Mines a 5 speed manual so I did more down shifting. As far as brakes if your going to do it on the reg basis brake box is a good idea. But if I remember right the brake sys on extended cab is raited for close to 8,ooo gvw. Just make sure you have plenty of meat on the pads.

Also if you doubt brake sys check your vin number it will tell you what brake package truck came with they offerd some heaver brakes during gen 2's this will help idenify what break sys you have on your truck. This is from lmc truck.

According to my VIN I have the 6001-7000 GWR hydraulic brake system. So, towing a 4200lb car on a uhaul car trailer would work? I am having the rear drum brakes replaced on Sunday.
