Custom Exhaust
im throwing around the idea of doing a custom dual stainless sytem on my new truck at the same shop who did my 96 ram. the 96 was customs mandrel bent stainless true duals from the manifolds with 2 magnaflow mufflers and 2 highflow magnaflow cats.super loud al the time 9something i dont want again. just a nice rumble until WOT, then it can scream for all i care).

i wanted to do the same setup (just quieter mufflers) with the same shop (excellent craftmanship by this man), however, he is now using compnents by a companies called flow pro and solo.

im still researching the products, but wanted to know if anyone has any experiences with either company.

i put this post in the 4.7 category because this is my engine size, but im sure it is applicable to the 5.7's as well, but wanted to post in the the exhaust specific sub forum. if possible please move to the most appropriate subforum.

If you do duals make sure to have a crossover (H or X pipe) to connect them, otherwise you will actually lose power over a good Y pipe setup. Also, FWIW the stock exhaust pipe is SS (409 SS I believe).

yeah i realize the stock pipe is stainless, but right now it a one lunger. id like to get back into the duals, but have the tips tucked up under the rear wheel...real sleeper style.

also thanks for the h pipe info. this exhaust guy knows his in the business in teh area IMO. i cant recall what he did in the last truck, but when i called about this one he giglled about the y pipe...

but when i called about this one he giglled about the y pipe...
what's that mean? lol

yeah i guess that was a bit vague..basically i tired to get away with a cat back from hiim, and he laughed and said the y pipe was too restrictive. he would do the cat back for 600, but of course recommended the full duals for 1200.

Damn that's expensive man. You could do a magnaflow y pipe swap and a magnaflow muffler swap for a few hundred at the most and have the same performance. Just another option...

still use the single tailpipe that way right?

with the Y pipe, is it welded or clamped?

snrusnak 07-25-2012 12:49 PM

yeah you just replace the y pipe with a more free flowing piece(I'd weld it, although it's possible to clamp it) and then replace the muffler with a more free flowing one(again I'd weld it, but you can clamp it). I'd also replace the pipe under the transmission as it's crimped.

It'll perform almost just as good as duals with a crossover(and better than duals without a crossover). It'll just save you tons of money.

And if you want it to look like dual exhaust just put another y pipe after the muffler(or single in/dual out muffler) to have dual tail pipes.

good tip. iill have t shop the prices around to some other shops who weld stainless..the guy i was using before was the best in thebusiness, but an hour away from my house.
