Ok today i went to dodge dealer to get a new steering shaft,it looks different then other shaft and the skinny part of shaft on old one was hooked uo to steering arm by firewall, but on this new one the skinny part of the shaft would have to go to gear box to work,Is this correct or did they give me a wrong shaft,1996 dodge 1500 4 wheel,i have pictures of a old one and a new mopar one.

Well i will call the dealer in the morning as i see you guys are no damn help on here unless it is to showcase off a painted or lifted truck

Well thanks. Anyway...

It's the wrong shaft. They gave you an intermediate shaft with a rag joint. Your production date may be '95 and that's where they screwed up.

Actually I think the '95 and down have the rag joint and the mid-96 changed it. Either way, they definitely gave you the wrong intermediate shaft.

well it shows that this shaft fits 1994 thru 2004 so i am really confused as i wont be going to work tomorrow and i am sure it will tke them several days to get the correct one then without a rag joint

I'm just wondering if you have a manual transmission or an automatic, and/or if it's a Sport makes a difference.

Because I know there's a difference between the column shift and the floor shift.

2wd vs. 4wd

and tilt vs. no tilt.

Did they at least ask any of those questions...or maybe leave one out?

they only ask for vin # and it is a 1996 dodge ram 1500 sport 4 wheel drive 318 v8 automatic, with tilt wheel,,,,I sure hope they can find and get me the part today as thursday i have a chance to make some extra money and being out of work for 14 months has really hit the house hold and i need to get the truck going.

valleyoaks 08-08-2012 06:55 AM

Well here is the part #55351113AE and if you search it this is suppose to fit a wide range of dodge vehicles,,,i just really curious if anyone has got a replacement oem shaft for these trucks and if it looks like this and you have to mount the rag joint at the firewall as that is the only way this would work,,,I cant find a oem shaft other then this anywhere on the internet except for a $300 borgeson and i cant do that, was hoping some guys have went with oem and could answer this

valleyoaks 08-08-2012 03:14 PM

Well that is the part you will get from OEM Dodge replacement,It fits alot of items as it seems the dodge techs drew up a revised 7 time shaft and it fits about 10 models of cars and trucks,,,,,Put it on and got better steering but still got a damn slight clunk noise in this truck,,only other thing i can see is maybe the drivers sidemotor mount has some slop, but it makes the noise on both sides and can be felt under the floorboards,,,if it is control arm bushings then it will have to clunk as i dont have another $600 to stick in a 20 year old truck just to take hunting and drive around town,, should have bought another ford or chevy i think:4-looney:

You gave just 58 minutes from your request for help to your 2nd post bashing the forums and it's members. You should realize the world doesn't revolve around you and to have patience. Afterall, this is a volunteer community not a pay service. You're being rude.
