2013 1500 diesel vs used 2500. First Ram and so stoked!
So I am looking for my first pickup and I want a diesel, personal preference.
My only reservations against getting a Dodge vs a Chevy is that I've read about rust issues with the body as well as needing a new transmission sooner. Of course I realize this is a Dodge forum and expect bias therein. But any truth there?
I've been considering buying a late model 2500 w/ Cummins diesel. I dont think I want to swing upwards of 50K on a new one.
So I went to the dealership this weekend and test rode the 2012 Ram 2500 Laramie Longhorn. OMG, such a great thrill.
Then I started talking to the dealer about how I wished they'd put a diesel in the 1500 and how I've read about rumors online. I loved that I saw with the new 2013, specifically the grill shutters and the air suspension. Come to think of it, what is the Checy competition to the Ram 1500?
Then he dropped the bomb... and he said that it in the coming year, its going to happen. This is me reacting:SHOCKED::SHOCKED::SHOCKED::SHOCKED: This is me
But, the 1500's diesel will likely be the smaller non-cummins one called the "VM." I am sort of bummed to hear that.
So a few questions:
1. Are there issues with Ram and rust?
2. What sort of transmissions issues could I expect at 5 or 10 years out? My understanding is that while the Cummins Diesel engine is quite reliable, the transmission used is less reliable.
3. Looks like either a used 2500 or a new 1500. But how reliable is that VM engine?
4. Lastly, the impression I get is that a Ram 2500 Crew gets maybe 15 mpg while the current 1500 Hemi does better. Is that accurate?
If a diesel is put into the 1500, what should be expected in MPG vs a Hemi in the 1500? Should be better in the diesel, right?
5. Also, in speaking with the salesperson, I was asking what the differences were b/w 1500 and 2500. HE remarked about things such as the 1500 suspension being coil-like on a locomotive vs leaf springs on the 2500. Does coil suspension made it ride smoother?
Here is what I've read: Rumors of a Ram diesel have been around for a while, and Allpar was told two years ago that there was definitely work on a Cummins V6 in the Ram 1500 (a V6, not the straight-six Ram currently uses in the 2500 and up). We believe however that the Ram 1500 diesel, which is likely to be coming soon, will use the VM 3.0 instead
How reliable is that VM engine?
I don't know how reliable either is above, but look forward to impressions.
Please advise as I am SO STOKED to buy my first Ram diesel!!!

Yes there seems to be a rust issue with the older rams IMO BUT I always take care if my trucks wash/wax all the time and I personally never had a vehicle rust on me. I know in our work ram 1ton diesel we have over 250k on it and no issues the trans is an Allison so it's rock solid but that's an 04 not sure on the new ones.....
The 2500's transmission is better than the 6 speed that comes in the 1500. The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is my 4 speed + 2 over drives transmission. Now if you got the 2013 diesel with the 8 speed that would be great, but I don't think the 8 speed is available till Jan '13. If you are going to be towing , I would go for the 2012 2500, but if its just personal preference then why not get the 2013?
The only thing is that you would have a 1st year new motor. Usually have a few bugs to work out on a new motor.
Here's another thought. I read that the main difference in b/w the 1500 and 25/35oo is in terms of axles and suspension. The 1500 is described in its marketing literature as having a 5 linked coil suspension like locomotives.
yet, confusing enough, the 2500/3500 are truly 'road locomotives'
I know how locomotives ride. Does this confusing marketing imply that hte 25/35oos ride rougher?
Yes, they do ride tougher. They're meant to hall a ton of weight, so when loaded down they ride quite nicely. But the suspension has to be stiff enough so that when loaded down the whole truck doesn't sink to the ground (exaggeration). 2500's and 3500's do ride tougher, but they're also more rugged as trucks.
Frankly, if you want a 2500 diesel with a solid tranny, get a late model year 3rd gen or early model year 4th gen with the manual, and you'll be all set. As far as rust goes, it can happen to any vehicle. The new Rams have far less rust problems than the old ones do. Just take care of it and you shouldn't have any problems.
As far as rust goes, it seems like in my area, they all rust, Dodge seems no worse or better than Ford or GM.
I recently bought a 2004 Dodge 2500 with a 5.9 Cummins. There is a big difference between a 1/2 ton and a 3/4 ton. Everything is bigger, suspension parts, springs, axles etc. I would also say if the truck is left stock, the transmission will last a lot longer than if you add a chip and bump up the horsepower. I'd say the transmission in the newer 3/4 tons are as good as anything except the Allison in the GM's.
As far as fuel mileage, my truck has 4.10 gears, so its meant for pulling not highway fuel mileage. I get between 14 and 15 mpg running around town, and between 17 and 18 mpg on the highway. The half tons I've had got around 12 mpg around town and about the same on the highway, 17 mpg. I had a 2007 1500 with a hemi, and I did get 20 mpg once, but that wasn't common, 17 was more normal on the highway.
How reliable will the new engine be? Check back in about 10 years. I'll believe the 1/2 ton diesels will be made when I see them on the dealer lots. It will probably happen, but who knows.
Do you need a diesel? I got one because I wanted one, not because I needed it. I do tow and haul a heavy load on occasion, but I could have got by with a 1/2 ton, but I've wanted a Cummins since they came out in the late 1980's. So far I've been happy with it.
But Im glad to see you posted with same mindset. Most of my mileage won't be towing but I believe in the long term and love diesel tech.
So far I've loved my Diesel. I've had no mechanical problems and my truck has about 115,000 miles on it, but I've only owned it a year. The only thing I feel I'm giving up with a 3/4 ton is the ride quality. In my opinion, most of the ride quality is lost with the tires. The tires are E-rated, which means they are suppose to run around 60psi. You could put a lower weight rated tire on them, which would help the ride, but thats probably a bad idea.
I can remember seeing a Cummins at the Mopar Nats when they first came out. I can't remember the exact year, 1988 or 1989. This guy had a sign in it that said "yes its fast, yes it tows anything, yes it gets good mileage, yes I'd trade it for a Hemi Cuda".
wouldn't count on a diesel in a 1500 anytime soon. epa hates diesel.
To answer question 5, yes, the coil suspension really does make the ride smoother. I had a 2010 1500 for about 1.5 yrs and it was so smooth of a ride. I now have a 2012 2500 PW and it is a rougher ride, but to be honest it isn't bad. I have an 09 F250 gasser for a work truck and it rides horrible.
I know the Rams used to be bad for rust, not sure as of now.
