Engine Replacement (318ci/5.2L)
“Any 1992 or newer 318/5.2 Magnum shortblock is a bolt-up affair. Have fun.” (re: 2001 Ram)

5.2 to 5.9L Swap
“The balance weight on a '97 is on the flexplate, so use the 5.9 flexplate and any zero-balance converter (5.2/5.9, 1996 or newer). Use matching computer.” *
* “As long as you're sticking with the same trans I know from experience that it doesn't matter which ECM you use.”

“i do believe mostly everything is interchangeable but you will need a new fly wheel and harmonic balancer seeing as the 318 is internally balanced and the 360 is externally balanced”

Fuel Pump (Re: 1996)
“looks like in the 1500 series Rams, the fuel pump is the same

Timing Chain, Cover, and Water Pump 2001 5.2-5.9L
“I already back tracked the timing chain/sprocket set and that is compatible.”
“Believe it or not the 3.9, the 5.2, and the 5.9 are interchangeable on the timing cover.”

2nd Generation Transmission
Transmission Swap (Re: 2001 318-360 compatability)
“The 46 went "RE" in 1996. Any 1996 or newer 46RE will swap.”
Note: “The number refers to the torque rating. Essentially 42,44= low, 45= medium, 46=high, 48=OMG!
The "R" stands for rear wheel drive. The "E" means electronic valve body, as opposed to the earlier 46RH which had a hydraulic valve body.”
Also… (Re: 99 318-360 compatability)
“Well Mike the trans are interchangeable . But the torque convertors are different . The one from the 5.9 is externally balanced . If you use that in the 5.2 , you will have a vibration from the motor . Yes the rear main is accessible with the trans out . I am a believer , if it's not broke don't fix it .”

2nd Generation Suspension
1500-2500 Suspension Swap
“A guy at my local autozone has a 94 1500 with 2500 suspension on it. he told me everything off 2500 and 3500 will bolt right up to a 1500 exept for the rear leaf springs. but all you have to do is bend the mounting ears out a little to fit in the bigger 3 inch wide leafs. im swaping everything while i have it torn apart so its probly guna turn into a week long project. hers what im doing,
- 2500 shocks and struts
- 2500 coil springs
- 2500 leafs
- wheel bearings
- ball joints
- u joints
- tie rod ends
- and all other bushings up front.”

2nd Generation Body
“They are interchangeable as a unit from 94-01. The difference being 94 to 96 has two sliders that meet in the middle. 96-01 has a single slider. I might be a little off on the year, but the footprint is the same if you pull the whole thing and aren't looking to just replace one pane.”
“My '97 has dual sliders. I had thought that the dual slider switched to the single slider in '98 when they redesigned the interior?”
Front Bumper (Chrome):
1996 brackets will not bolt directly to the 2001 frame, however the 2001 brackets will bolt to the 1996 bumper.
This weekend I decided to finally put a straight bumper on the truck - I chose one off of a '96 1500 assuming that this bumper will fit on a truck with the exact same bumper; I was mistaken (as was the salvage yard). When I went home to install the bumper, everything lined up perfect except the front two brackets where the three bolts mount the bracket to the frame.
I removed the '01 brackets off my old bumper and they fit the '96 bumper no problem. THEN everyhting bolted right up.
**Note: I suggest swapping the carriage bolts for hex bolts as vice grips and eventually a grinder were needed to remove the brackets from both bumpers because the carriage bolts just kept spinning.
2nd Generation Interior
“I believe the 94-97 are the same, 98 on its own (see below), and then the 99-01s.
The 98s are different as they have a cig lighter where the air bag stuff is on the 99-01, easy fix, remove the lighter. Also the 98 has a pull out switch, 99-01s are a turn knob, it still fits but its a smaller opening.”

“Then again not all Gen 2 parts are interchangeable. Take something as generic as a headliner. I tried a '97 in my '95 and it was 4 inches too narrow. I still haven't figured that out.”
