Housing search

So I am thinking about purchasing a home but do not know how to go about it. I am asking you guys for help! How do I go about searching? Am I suppose to get a realtor or do I search? If I search what are good sites? I am looking for a fix me up type house, not 100% fix up but you know.

You will spend a few extra for a realitor only to make sure you dont get screwed....
But you can search yourself but a realitor is free to tell them what you want, besides they have a complete database with shitloads of stuff you cant find in a common search. Here is one site i used to find my foreclosed house really cheap
http://www.zillow.com/

Thanks GTyankee!

i agree with www.zillow.com its definitely the best site when it comes to showing you all of the homes around you or in the area that you want that are for sale, foreclosed, or pre-foreclosure.

I just did this with my wife. Go get pre approved through your bank, then you take your pre approval to a realtor and tell them what you want. They will find homes in your price range and you go from there

For your first house I would definitely use a realtor. There may be inspections, regulations yadda yadda that you would not know about. Using a realtor is a way of protecting yourself from unseen problems.

I would highly recommend getting a realtor, especially on your first home, and especially as a buyer. We bought our first home 2 years ago, and my friend is a realtor so basically did it all free of charge(although he charged the seller which in turn gets passed through into the price of the home but whatever)...

There is a lot going on, especially when looking at foreclosures and short sales. It is worth spending a little on a realtor that can guide you, besides, you will be saving a lot on the house being a foreclosure or such. We bought a foreclosed home as well, and there are many things we would have done wrong if it wouldn't have been for the realtor. Their advise and knowledge is worth while as well. It's a very complicated process, I wouldn't do it alone, not as a buyer.

Here in FL we used the MLS(don't know if that's FL specific or not...) and basically it's an interactive map that shows EVERY listing in a given area, with pertinent info. Kind of like looking at google maps.

Good luck, it is sadly a painful process(took us like 8 months) but in the end it is well worth it. We now have our own home and are paying roughly half what we paid when we rented apartments.

The MLS is a thing in KY too so im guessing it is all across the US. anyway, Sean, what things would you have done wrong had you not had a Realtor?? Me and my girlfriend are possibly looking into foreclosed homes (because they are great deals) and i just want to get some info on someone who has gone through the process before we do?? We will be getting a realtor but im just curious.
