Serpentine belt tensioner
Hey guys I had another question for you, I've been suspecting my belt tensioner is bad for a few months and I just wanted your insight. The belt that was on it when I bought it started to squeak after a few months so I changed it, and a little after a month later it started to squeak again.
My thought was maybe my failure to clean the pulleys may have been the problem so I got another under waranty and cleaned the pulleys of mos of the debris before installing it. Now it's around a month later and it is a rather cold rainy day but I also noticed the power steering pump groaning when I turned while going slow, and then at a stop light the was a pretty good shudder for a second or two that made me think the belt had slipped.
I noticed that if I put my finger on the belt between the compressor and power steering pump I can move the belt nearly three inches, I'm fairly strong but that still seems too much.
So my question is could the belts be losing tension as they get broken in and the tensioner is no longer able to keep proper tension on the pulleys or would that not cause the pump to groan at all. I should also mention the steering has play, most likely to the failed grease boots on the tie rods, but I've never had any problems with the wheel being stiff or anything like that.
It sounds like a weak tensioner but it's hard to say for sure without using a belt tensioner gauge.
I've been thinking the tensioner was weak since it seems to bounce back and forth when idleing without the ac going on and off or anything. Also when I press down on the belt the distance the tensioner moves its full distance it seems.
