Marbles in a coffee can?

About once a week when I start the Ram, it sounds like there's a couple marbles rolling around in a metal coffee can. It only lasts for a couple of minutes, and then it's quite the rest of the day. I have heard lifters, and tappets do this before, but this sounds different. Any idea what this might be? Ram is a 2003 4.7 STL with about 106,000 miles on it. Thanks.

Is it engine speed dependent or just random rattling?

It's likely the lash adjusters(similar to lifters). It's fairly common. Mine does it, has forever and I have 70k miles. Normally does it at first start up of the day for about a minute or so.

snrusnak. That's what mine does. Thanks for the info.

Sounds like the lash adjusters are bleeding down aftere a couple hours of sitting. I would have them replaced if it were mine.

ramtech, I've seen many people post about this, and it seems pretty common. I never thought of it as an issue until your post. Is it an issue? Do the cams have to be removed to replace them?
