How do i replace sparkplugs on my 2011
 
My 2011 Ram has a 4.7 engine in it. Does anyone know how to replace the plugs? is it easy? were are they?

I specifically bought my second 2011 4.7L for ease of self maintenance. I changed the plugs on my previous 2005 4.7L. It's pretty easy, as long as you have the correct tools. It's all working on top the engine, just make sure you have anti seize for the plugs, and a spark plug socket that holds the plug in to it. My 2011 has 22K so I'll be doing it on that engine when its time. It's just nuts and bolts mechanics.

Does the 2011 Ram 1500 4.7L V8 have 8 plugs or 16?? If it's the same as my 2005 4.7 L V8 I know what I'm doing, but I read a post some where about upper and lower banks. Is it like the Hemi with 16 plugs to change? Any 2011 4.7L guys done a plug change and can answer, thanks.

Its 8. There are 16 plugs on the hemi 5.7. Also the change interval is different between the two engines. 32,000 on hemi 5.7 and 48,000 on the 4.7.

Thanks United316, I was pretty sure it was only eight but I had read a thread where they were referring to the upper and lower banks. I did the plug change on my 2005 1500 4.7L and it was fairly simple. I know the newer 4.7L's have a decent horsepower increase over my 2005.

The heat shields are a pain, and some thick-wall sockets won't fit down in them.
Forgettabout the 48K plug changes. Your fuel economy will go to crap, especially if you run E-10 or if your's is a Flex-Fuel engine that can run E-15. Spark plugs aren't that expensive not to change then every 25K, IMHO. If you drive mainly in-town, think strongly about one heat-range hotter plugs. To check them, run thirty minutes at highway speed (on cruise) put it in neutral, shut the engine off and let it coast down, then pull a couple of plugs, one on each side (middle ones). If they're nice and light tan, you're perfect. If they're white, you need to go back to the OEM heat range. I have a 2004 Dakota with the early 4.7L and it has run rich since day one. I'm running Bosch single Platinums a heat range and a half hotter than the OEM Champions. After 20 minutes of the ECU "learning" what plugs were in it, I get better idle, better acceleration and a tiny bit better fuel economy, but there's nothing gonna make the early 4.7L get GOOD gas mileage.:i_rolleyes:

Repacing sparkplugs
 
Judging from the way you asked your question, I'd just let the dealer do it. It's been many years since I've changed plugs myself and never owned a torque wrench. My opinion,...it's worth the extra cost to have your dealer do this for you. Think of it as a long term good investment.

I agree...I can't be bothered. Piece of mind. Drop it off....couple hrs all done ready to roll. Doing it at home you could run in all sorts of trouble than your screwed. My dealer down the block is great bunch of guys.

The first gen 4.7L (2007 and older) has 8 spark plugs. The second gen 4.7L (2008 and newer) has 16 spark plugs. The 5.7L hemi also has 16 spark plugs.

Changing the plugs on the 08+ 4.7L isn't very hard, the only thing that's tricky is the upper bank plugs can get siezed to the coil boots and the boots rip. Then you have to fight to get the ripped boot out and then have to replace the coil at ~$20/ea as the boots aren't sold separately(although someone said NAPA now carries them but I didn't confirm).

If you're boots rip, take a piece of copper pipe(like for home plumbing), it's either 3/8" or 1/2", I don't recall off hand, and use it to push between the ripped boot and the plug. This will break the "seal", and then you can use needle nose pliers to pull the ripped boots out. This is typically only an issue if you go past the recommended maintenance interval.

08+ 4.7L uses different plugs on the upper and lower banks, make sure you get the correct plugs. Also it has different maintenance intervals for each 8.

Also forgot for the upper bank you need a thinwall spark plug socket else it won't fit. I had to take my thinwall socket and grind it down even thinner.
