Program Question

I bought my 07 Ram about a year ago now. The previous owner had already done several mods to the truck. I'm about 99.9% sure the truck has a tune in it from some type of flash programmer but the programmer did not come with the truck.

My question is if I purchase a new programmer (whatever brand) am I going to have an issue with tuning the truck? Do I need to take it into the dealership and have them flash it back to a stock program?

Most programmers return the ecu settings back to stock when they are unplugged. You should be ok, go ahead and grab another tuner. Someone with firsthand experience please feel free to set me straight if I am wrong.

If it's anything like my Subaru, the ECU has a core map which can only be flash when the engine isn't running and a real time map in which things can be changed on the fly or real time. So yes if it was tuned, the dealer should be able to flash your ECU with a current factory program.

Core flash = can not be erased just by unplugging the battery - has to be re flashed.
Real time = yes this can be reset to what the core flash or base map is set to just by unplugging the battery.

Base map has all the basic parameters, while the real time maps gets updated with driving habits and environmental variables. Open/Close loop - detonation/ping detection

If there is a PCM aftermarket canned or custom tune loaded and you dont have the programmer that was used then pcm reflash is needed to go back to stock. Of course depending how heavy those "several mods" are on the the truck then it may not run correctly or even crank over when its back to factory.

Thanks for your help. I guess "several mods" sounds like the truck is wild. I just really have the basics CAI, Dual Exhaust and TB spacer. Most of the other stuff is body trim, lift kit and radio.

Would you think it is worth spending the money to have the dealership flash it back to stock or just get a programmer and start tuning?

Superchips looks for stock program when you plug it in; if you go with a Diablo you won't have that problem. Just keep in mind if you have to take it to a dealer and there is a flash update they'll overwrite whatever program you have installed.
