97 ram 1500 4x4 engaging/disengaging

Hi All i have a 97 ram 1500 4x4 5.2 L auto reg cab,, I had a problem with getting 4wheel drive to engage, and upon investigating, found that the vacuum acuator motor was rusted,so I had it replaced.. the switch is acting up so I am going to replac e that too. Ive had older 4x4 dodges (mid 70s) and early 90s dakotas,,excellent wotkinh 4x4s. this ram is different..Its hadr to get the 4x4 engaged, even with the new motor/actuator. the vaacuum seems OK..for some reason usually I have to go for about 150 feet before it,ll engage in x4x..and hard to get die engaged after that..the dakotas went into 4x4 as soon as I pulled the lever into 4H,, DOes the 97 Ram need to move a certain distance ahead before the front axle engages?, IM AT AN LOSS AS TO WHATS THE ISSUE?..or is that the way its supposed to work....whift into 4H and pull ahead 50 to 100 ft before it engages?
Suggestions?

If all your tires are the same size, profile and make, and are aired to the same PSI, I'd consider looking at alignment between the front and rear axles. If there is a bind in the driveline, the axle disconnect will generally not willingly release. I have found that on my 98, to get an instant release, if I dynamite the brakes for a split second, it releases immediately. All I know, sorry! Never had a problem engaging, if the vac lines were connected.

all tires are same...going to chk out the vacuum lines next...I doubtr that it should take that long to engage..Like I said,,, my other dodges worked great, always there when I needed it
