Truck won't start?? totally stumped
1997 Ram 1500 360 engine will not start. I went out and got a brand new battery so terminals clean, cables are good it's getting power from it just fine. It's got oil, water, gas and I spent all day following lines from the gas tank, checking wires and plugs and it all looks good. When I go to start it it turns over and tries real hard to start like the batteries just low but when I give it gas it rocks the engine a bit and sputters and just will not fire.
Anyone had any thing like this happen before? Tomorrow I'm going to do a little test I know to see if it's getting spark. Also gonna get a buddy to turn the key to the on position and listen really hard in the gas tank cause I should be able to hear the fuel pump in the tanks electric motor turn on to see if that's working.
Honestly I'm just really stumped and never had any vehicle do this strange thing before. Any input or ideas would be great. Thanks, Sam.
Checking for fire, fuel pressure and volume are the first things you need to do. You should also check the PCM for any codes. If you have a scan tool that reads live data, check the cam/crank difference to see if the engine is in time and the sensors are working.
I just had this problem on my C/K 1500, turns out the fuel pump was shot. Had the same problem last year to on my Ram, both new pumps and both trucks run great still.
