2004 2wd AT engine light/transmission issue

This morning, as I stopped after backing out of my driveway. The CEL came on, engine sputtered but stayed running. As I pulled away I thought the tires were spinning (icy here) but soon realized the truck was in 3rd or 4th gear. I was able to manually shift to 1st and 2nd. Down the road a little I pulled over, shut it off and re started. This seemed to take care of the shifting issue but CEL stayed on. Furthermore, I'm not sure the overdrive may not be working now. at 65 it was turning right around 2K. Truck is new to me(less than 300 miles) so I am not familiar with where it usually revs in OD. Truck has high miles (172k) but seems to have been superbly cared for in the past. I was just wondering if anyone has experienced this issue and what it entailed. Next step is to get the code read. Any other thoughts?
