3.21 vs. 3.55 in the 8 speed MPG?
 
Was curious to get some real world MPG's. The local dealership doesn't have any 8 speeds in yet, and probably won't for quite a while. So I was hoping to hear what others are getting with these 2 speeds and try to figure out which would best suit me.

I drive 10%/90% city/highway with some large hills on my commute. I will be using it as a daily drive and won't really tow often enough to worry about it. Some people are saying that you won't notice a difference in MPG between the 3.55 and 3.21 in the 8 speed, but can't give any numbers...curious to see these.

actually, there are no numbers available for the HEMI with the 8 speed yet
the website site reads NA

of course you will get the best mileage with the 3.21 but you won't have much for torque
with the 3.55 you will have enough torque to handle most situations, it won't shift down as much on the hills, when you have to load the bed or tow
If you live in Snow country, i would add the Limited Slip Differential
it is a available option with the 3.21, 3.55, & 3.92 rear axles

I was actually thinking of the V6...where do you see the numbers?

I find it funny how some people say you will have no torque with 3.21 an the 8 speed. They don't realize the 1st gear ratio of the 8 speed is 4.7:1 which is lower than the current 6 speed with 3.55's(first gear of 3:1). So the 8 speed with 3.21 out pulls the 6 speed with 3.55. STILL though, get the 3.55, as you will NOT get better mpg with the 3.21(unless you regularly cruise at or above 75mph. That is the only situation you will achieve higher mpg.

Would the 3.92 provide better acceleration ? (V6, 8 speed, 4x4)

I would go 3.92 if you plan to go with a tire any larger than stock. With the deep first gear of the 8spd I would think the 3.55 would a good match for the stock tire diameter, especailly for someone who does 90% highway driving.

I would not recommend the 3.21 with the V6 in a Ram. especially if its a Quad Cab or Crew Cab, its too heavy for the revs. My fiance has the 3.6L with the 3.21 gears in 5 spd auto in her 4,400 lb Wrangler and never revs high enough in town, its great on the highway though. So it depends, if you can test drive both gearings, go with the one you like though.

I respectfully disagree. The gearing range is so wide with the new 8 speed (I believe 1.5x the 6 speed), the final gear doesn't make near as much a difference as it did with the 6 speed. If you need power, push the gas, the trans will downshift, and you'll get your power. That's it's job. Final gear on the highway, however, will be lower with the 3.21, saving gas.

There's a hugggeee difference between a 5 speed in the wrangler and the 8 speed in the Ram.

I ended up ordering one with the 3.55 gears after test driving one at a dealership (they didn't have one with 3.21 gears). We were getting 7.7L/100km on the highway and I was pretty impressed. Figured the 3.55 would "futureproof" the vehicle more than the 3.21's, as well.
