Going to look at first Ram, simple question.
Hey guys, I'm going to look at a 95 Ram Wednesday. The woman wants $1000, because she says it runs bad and shoots black smoke out of the exhaust. I talked to my dad about it (ACE cert. tech) and he said it sounded like a coolant temp. sensor. I was just wondering if this sounded like a likely cause to the rest of you? It makes sense to me I'm just looking for a second opinion before making the trip up there. Other than that issue it looks to be a real clean truck and even comes with a spare 5.9 :smiley_thumbs_up:
Well he is way more experienced that I ever am but I google searched it. If its definitely black and not greyish blue (oil burning) then it may be something simple like too rich a fuel mixture. Possible causes: Fuel Injectors: A leaking or dripping fuel injector will cause a rich fuel condition.
Fuel Pressure Regulator: A stuck closed fuel pressure regulator will cause a rich fuel condition.
Fuel Return: A restricted fuel return line will cause a rich fuel condition.
Print out the OBD1 codes from this or another site, and read them. This is done by turning the key on and off 3 times, rapidly, and watching the flashing light, probably the check engine light. I'd guess that you have a cracked or otherwise inoperative O2 sensor, $85 . This is the one item I actually do buy from Chrysler, and I buy them by VIN#. O2 sensors REALLY can affect your mileage. My experience with aftermarket ones is not good.
