Got bad knews and need help!!!
 
Kay so i was doing the oil change on my truck and i was gonna check the rear diff fluid, because this past winter i was hitting up the loging roads and my hunting grounds. And to my luck i noticed that my rear end didn't look the same. it didnt have the rubber plug on the diff cover! but had an allan key on bolt on the side. So i called up the dealer to see what rear end i had on it and turns out its a 235 comander rear end with 3.55 gears!!! I almost lost it on the guy!!!! 3.55 gears on a 4x4!!!! what dumbass designed this!!!! i have bin trying to find out more info on this rear end and cant really find anything!!! and i need help to find 4.10 gears for front and rear and im having troubles!!! can any one shine some light on this for me?

Not really sure why you're flipping out but 3.55 gears are very common on Ram trucks and have been for years. I find it interesting that you had no complaint until you were told the ratio of the rear end you currently have. So what is it exactly you want to know about the rear end in your truck?

well first i wanna no is it possible to but 4.10s in my rear end cuz ive called the dealer and they said its probably not gonna fit ill have to go with the 3.95 gears. But im planing on putting a 6" procomp lift with 20inch wheels with 37inch tires. so now im wondering are the gears gonna fit? or am i gonna have to look for a used 2009-2010 rear end? thanks

Not sure how ring gears are designed, but if anything, I'd think the 4.10s would be smaller than what's in there. If they were bigger, you'd be talking taller gears, not shorter...

BTW, I've never heard of the Commander brand of axles... Are you sure it's not a Chrysler 9.25" rear? If they're the same... it shows you how much I know about Chrysler axles....

FastnUgly has 4.56's in his a believe with a 8 inch or bigger lift. Look him up.

3.55s are the standard gears on most of the Ram line, and have been for many years. They are the best compromise of mileage and torque output. My old '07 QC was a 4wd with 3.55s, ran mid-13s at the track and could get 21mpg. If you want a stock taller gear then you need to specify when buying/ordering, or you can fork out the money and get the gears swapped yourself. Now, you can swap to a set of 4.10s easily, but if you're planning 37s, then I'd go to 4.56s. When you do the swap to such a tall gear, you need to trim down a part inside the carrier housing for clearance.

You only started caring when you found out about the gearing, but up until that point you had no complaints and unless you had a rear axle swap, you have the Chrysler 9.25.

4.10:1 gears are taller because you're rotating the input shaft 4.1 times to each revolution of the wheel. A shorter gear will require fewer input revolutions compared to the wheel's output.

Hey thanks everyone! this really helped!! and yeah i should of specified that i wanted lower gears! thats my fault! just thought that it would of came with the 3.95s at least didn't no that it came with 3.55s!! thanks for all your help guys!

First of all, you can't change the gears in the front axle, you have two choices, buy an axle that has a set of 3.92 gears in it, or find a front carrier from an 11 or earlier, the gears in the front carriers of 2012's are welded in. If you go with an 11 or earlier carrier, you will most likely have to have some machining done. The rear end will accept up to 4.10 gears, if you want to go lower, eg. 4.56, you will have to have the rear carrier machined

At the end of the day, its doable. either when purchasing the truck or after the fact.
The fact that you want to lift and throw 37's be glad you didnt spend additional up front as you would want to swap them out to 4.56.
Id prefer 4.88' with 37's but there is no option for 4wd. 2wd guys have the option.

None the less, 4.56 is what you want when you lift.

You'll be glad you swapped the gears as my truck was an absolute dog with the 3.55's and 37" MT's

So would it be fine if i ran 20" wheels with 35" tires right now with the 3.55 gears and still be able to go 4x4? right now i have the leveling kit on with 17"wheels with 265/70R17 stock tires and wheels, and i want to get 20" wheels and 35" tires for now until i get all the parts and gears..????
