Ram 1500 Diesel Is On The Way!

Chrysler is set to offer a diesel engine in its Ramhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png half-ton pickup, reports USA Today. The official announcement is expected to be made on Thursday. The decision was made based on internal research that pointed to considerable pent up demand for a diesel version of the Ram 1500http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png, according to Ram CEO Fred Diaz, who was quoted in the report.
According to Diaz, the diesel Ram will not be a small-market option but a significant part of the Ram 1500 lineup.
Predictably, the engine will be a version of the same 3.0-liter V-6 that powers the recently-announced 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokeehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png diesel, sourced from Italy’s VM Motori. In the Jeep, it’s good for 240 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, but ratings are likely to be increased for truck duty. The price premium, meanwhile, should be well short of the nearly $8000 commanded by the Cummins I-6 in the Ram HD. Expect the engine to be available starting with the 2014 model year Ram 1500 lineup.
Chrysler was apparently planning on holding off on the announcement of the diesel Ram for several months, but reportedly sped up the timeline after workers at its Warren Truck Assembly Plant received a memo mentioning the launch of a new diesel engine in July 2013.
While the diesel is unlikely to sway too many Ford and GM loyalists, it will certainly create a lot more buzz for Ram, which already scored our 2013 Motor Trend Truck of the Year honor. Truck enthusiasts have been clamoring for such an offering under the hood of a half-ton truckhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png for years, and Ram stands to benefit by being the first to market.

With the American-market Jeep Grand Cherokee receiving a diesel engine option and Chrysler Group CEO Sergio Marchionne hinting other light trucks and SUVs in the U.S. will get diesels, our spy photographer has now caught a Ram 1500http://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png tester at a diesel pump.
In the spy photo, a man is seen inserting a green diesel pump into the Ram pickup’s fuel tank. This suggests Ram is in the middle of development on a diesel Ram 1500 truckhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png that could take some attention away from the Ford F-150 with the increasingly popular EcoBoost V-6 engine.
The refreshed 2013 Ram 1500 (pictured below) is set to receive Chrysler Group’s Pentastar V-6 enginehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png and an eight-speed automatic that’s already available in the Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300. A diesel 1500 would lead to improved mileage, a good thing considering the pre-refresh 2012 Ram 1500′s EPA ratings top out at 16 mpg combined, down from the Ford F-150 with the 3.7-liter V-6, at 19 mpg.
While the Nissan Titan has been caught testing a Cummins diesel engine, some suggest the Ram 1500 will share the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 found in the Jeep Cherokee offered in the European market.

that poor guy haha. if they didn't want to be seen fillin up the truck why not get a gas can of diesel and fill it in private? Anyways, that's awesome they are doin this!

Hell ya, over 420ft lbs of torque is a hell of a boat hauler :D Since that's what the Jeep is rated at I'm betting 450-475ish for the Ram just because it's a lot heavier than the Jeep. That mated to the 8 speed or the newer Aisin transmission from the 3500 would be awesome.

It's ridiculous how staged all these auto "spy" shots are.

there used to be such a thing as spy shots, when cars were wrapped up on test tracks and photographers needed telephoto lenses to get a decent shot. Now any one can damn near take a pic on the highway with a cell phone because they're completely unwrapped and have the damn manufacturer plates on them. The Jeep Diesel was supposed to be secret but they put a damn badge on the back of the Jeep, then sent in a "spy shot" of it. There was a effing badge on it! What do we need a spy shot for if its openly tested, doesn't seem like a large secret to me lol

Better yet, put a Mopar bed cover on it, and put a 50 gallon fuel cell in it. :thk:

I just found out in slotted to go to school on this new engine in April at the Atlanta training center. Pretty cool, since only one technician from each dealership is allowed to go until all dealerships have someone trained.
