98 runs fine in nuetral, dies in gear?

i picked up a 98 1500 5.2 auto 2wd.owner says tranny wouldnt upshift out of first, park doesnt work.truck was parked 1.5-2 years ago....hasnt driven since.
in nuetral she fires up and runs flawless, plenty torque roll on acceleration.
put the truck in drive or reverse, the engine dies...if i floor it the engine idels at about 4-500 rpm on the verge of being dead, back to neutral...its fine.
caught hell driving her on trailor, but she offloaded and ran decent,i even spun tires in reverse easily.

whats going on?

Got any codes stored in the PCM? What's the fluid level and condition?

igotit 02-17-2013 12:55 PM

fluid is a little on the purple side, doesnt smell burnt, fluid level is fine.i was leaning toward the solenoids in the tranny...being po states it wouldnt upshift when parked 2 years ago.
she wont go into park,i believe that would be in the colum.

also found out last night the water pump is toast, pours out the weep hole.guess i need to reair that pump, drop the pan make sure theres no large objects lying in the tranny pan...ect.
the check engine light isnt on,ill have to see about retrieving any stored codes manually...if that can be done.im a pretty good mechanic....just not familiar with these dodge trucks.

just trying to figure out if a tranny issue would make the engine cut out....or is that a whole different problem.sounds like she isnt getting any fuel when i put it into gear.

If the torque converter were staying locked up, it could cause a stalling in gear condition.

igotit 02-17-2013 02:09 PM

wouldnt the converter trip the check engine light?

RamTech 02-17-2013 04:35 PM

Not necessarily.

igotit 02-18-2013 12:39 PM

today the engine runs fine in gear.....ill have to tear into it,repair water pump....and really run it to determine whats going on.

igotit 02-19-2013 11:06 PM

putting new water pump on now...old pump was toast.i don't care what the previous owner say....this truck over heated, water pump impeller grinds housing bad, engine didn't hold water.
maybe it ran hot,not letting engine build rpms....causing tranny to not upshift.no water in oil,she fires right up.ill have to pull compressin check soon.

engine fires right up,runs and idles smooth, accelerates nicely.torque rolls truck on acceleration.i hope im fine without an overhaul.

finished water pump install, added water to radiator....water pours out above the pump.im assuming the 1 inch hose that hooks up ontop the pump runs to the intake.cant see it....but assuming that hose is busted....or the intake is cracked.
gonna call this the doomed dodge.

igotit 03-08-2013 08:13 PM

looks like I gotta pull the ac compresser and ac bracket to access that hose that may or may not be leaking.

are there any other suprises involved to remove that particular hose?

edit

pulled alt,ac comp, idler pully and air box.the hose in question was toast, also found evidence of the ol 318 really running hot.the exposed portion of the head gasket crumbled.into a grey powder.my 93 Toyota is like that....I cooked it until it wouldn't run anymore....lol.

hopefully I can get a new hose on tonight, put water in it....no leaks,no overheating....and no running bad due to water getting into cylinders...ect.ill let you guy know.

hose split on the bottom of intake side.
