HOW TO: Disassemble Door Handles for Paint
Ok, I took the day to figure out how to get the chrome section of the door handle off in order to paint it...I'm not going to get into taking the door panel off and where to drill the holes in order to access the screws because there is a how to already on that. And for the record, drilling the holes makes removing the door panels so much easier!!!

Now, you are going to need a 7/16" drill bit and a T8 Torx bit to complete this process. On the backside of the handle you will see the single screw hole for the screw that mounts it to the door...

You will drill 2 7/16" holes on either side of the main screw hole and just a little off center towards the middle of the handle...

Once the holes are drilled you will see the 2 T8 Torx heads. Unscrew these screws...

Now start to pull on the chrome part of the handle on the side that you removed the two screws. DO NOT TRY TO PRY FROM THE OTHER SIDE, YOU WILL BREAK THE NOTCHES HOLDING THEM IN. It doesn't take a whole lot of effort...I don't have a pic of this but if you look at the backside of the chrome piece you will see the plastic notches holding it on...

Once you get that side popped out, there are a couple of "clips" on the top and bottom of the chrome part in the center of the handle, once these are undone keep pulling from that side so you do not bend (read break) the plastic notches holding the handle on the other side.

The chrome piece will now be seperated from the actual handle so you can paint it. I have not started painting yet as I am waiting on some color match paint but I will start the prep process tonight and follow up in this thread with how it turns out.

Just be careful and take your time and you will have no issues and no broken plastic:LOL:

It will be a little bit... I ordered the mopar color match paint since I have used it already and the color is near perfect with my truck...doesn't show that it has shipped yet so who knows...but I have sanded the handles all down and just waiting to get the paint and will do a final sand then start the painting process...they have sanded down nicely tho

hell if i had known that they came apart they easy i would have done that, i just bought some of the black plastic ones off ebay 45$ shipped an they were brand new all 4 of them so it was easier and cheaper than painting them, but thats my .02, good little "how to" tho and a very cheap mod someone can do at home for cheap

If I wanted them black that would definitely be easier...but color matched is my plan...and with my "odd" paint color there isn't any other way to get them besides painting myself...sometimes it's such a pain having this color...

I really wish the *******s I ordered the paint from would ship the paint...I guess they didn't actually have it in stock so they had to order I guess it will be awhile because my truck goes in to the body shop wed to get the repairs from the accident fixed...prolly be in there about a week I would imagine...

FSTASFCK 02-25-2013 09:59 AM

well after contacting the seller of the paint, they said it was shipping overnight I should be able to get them painted and installed just in time to drop it off at the body shop to start repairing damage...

Look at what came in and I got started...first put a coat of adhesion promoter, a coat of etching primer, a coat of regular primer, finally a color coat...waiting on that to dry a bit before I hit it with some clear...I hope to have them back on the truck sometime tonight

Looks good so far!!!
