Hey everybody. I picked up a 98 1500 sport 4x4 with nv3500 a few months ago. It wasnt taken care of very well so Ive been taking care of all the odds and ends.
I'm going to start with the things I've done that are drivetrain related. I replaced the pinion and carrier bearings in the rear and since the shifting was notchy and would grind on downshifts I changed the trans fluid with pennzoil synchromesh. Shifts much better but I did see a ggod bit of shavings on the magnet.
Fast forward six weeks and I started getting a random grinding noise that at first would just happen for a second only in first after I was off the clutch. Hauled an engine and trans plus some other parts about a hundred miles and the grinding stopped, but was replaced with a chirping sound that would go away after I drove for about five minutes. Sound didn't seem to change whether or not I depressed the clutch.
A month of the new sound, and I pulled my neighbor out of his muddy backyard, nothing major his tires were just bald and it's been raining alot. After that the grinding is back and and more pronounced.
I'm wondering if this sounds like a bad pilot bearing of throwout bearing to you guys. The trans mount looks a little cracked, so I'm going to try that before pulling the trans. Also the t-case is pretty leaky,and the slave cylinder is a little loose,but the bolts are tight. The sound seems to be coming from the clutch area.
