How to clean a throttle body?

Alright so since I had seen a picture of someone posted the pic of their old throttle body and the grime build-up.. I figured it was time to get mine off and clean it.

What should I use to clean it with, and should I take it off the truck or just leave it on?

I read somewhere on here that a Dodge tech said to use Mopar brake cleaner. Anything that can cut oil but not eat aluminum should work. DEFINITELY take it off!!

+1. Take it off for sure. If it's really bad scrubbing it with an old toothbrush or scotchbright works well too.

On my 04 I cleaned my event every other oil change. Take it off and I used a shop rag and starter fluid/ carb cleaner. I also remove the pvc valve and cleaned it at the same time

Remove it, then you can get into the intake manifold as well. I cleaned mine with seafoam spray, but the other suggestions will work, though I'd be careful with carb cleaner around anything with electronics since most will corrode copper bearing alloys. I soaked it for a good hour, then went at it with a scotchbrite pad and some detailing brushes until it was clean. While I worked the TB I also soaked down the inside of the intake manifold and then cleaned everything I could reach with rags.

Lmao Yea it was.. It just seems like one of those little things that slips by.. And my old owner never actually worked on the truck. So I am gonna assume I am in for a treat. But whatever.. I love my Ram and want to make it the best I can... I will clean every inch of that engine with a tooth brush if needed.

Had my truck in the shop because it was running a little rough. Had my whole fuel system cleaned. Mechanic said my throttle body was very dirty. Truck runs really good now! This is something I will be checking regularly going forward. Doesn't seem to be that hard to do. I am sure I would have noticed when I put my intake in. Looked at it when I had my intake tube off this weekend...looks nice and clean still!
