99-01 front suspension on 94-98 truck?
 
Hey everyone,

Now that newer trucks are coming in the junkyard, I've noticed the 99-01 Rams have two piston front calipers (larger brakes overall) and a differently designed front suspension from the older 2nd Gen Rams.

What I'm wondering is...what needs done to swap those onto my 1996? Just both control arms and spindles? Or is the whole front subframe different?

Does anyone know what all I would need? It would also get rid of that ugly front hub that sticks out of any aftermarket wheels.


Also my truck is 2wd. I also noticed the newer 2wds have the place in the back of the hub where the 4wd axle would go through...so differently designed as I said.


But anyone here no what would be required to put the newer suspension under my older truck?

Sorry I missed this earlier...

Here's what I'd do. First this will require a bit of research.
Pull up Rock Auto. See if the wheel bearings are the same. Somewhere Dodge went to a modular sealed hub bearing assembly. If that is correct...check and see if the ball joint part numbers are the same.
If they are, you can swap a pair of spindles from a 2000 to your '98, then the hub bearing assemblies rotors, caliper mounts (which will fit the new spndles) etc.
Now for some reason the ball joints arent the same, you may have to physically check them at a parts store. Pay attention to the length and taper angle...you may be able to still use the 2000 spindles on your ball joints. If not, can you make them work anyway? Or will you need control arms? They should swap, but again you'll need to check the mounting points.

I could do this for you but you'll learn more by doing it yourself. Feel free to ask if you have issues with the parts and I'll try to help. It's a very good mod to increase your braking power, and you can swap the larger Chevy 1 ton cylinders into the rear Delco brakes you have now to give a bit more whoa.

I'll check on all that...I was hoping to see if someone has done this before...lol But, I'll check. I was told part of the revision was because of ball joint problems with the prior design, so I have a feeling everything is different including the control arms. I'll check though.

And as far as the rear goes, I plan on swapping some 3rd gen rear disc brakes on to it. Same rear axle and same front brakes, so might as well. I'll grab the prop valve and buy a new master cylinder as well.

Basically my truck needs all new braking everything, so I figured, if I'm replacing it all, might as well upgrade. But I'm too poor for a real upgrade (like Wilwood, etc) so a new Dodge setup will have to do...haha.

Eh...not looking good. Might have to change out the whole subframe.

The steering box, pitman arm, control arms, ball joints, bearings, everything...is different.

UPDATE!!!

I think I have made some discoveries with this...it looks like the spindles themselves will swap over.

In 1999/2000 they went to a bolt in type ball joint instead of press in, but otherwise every is the same size, so, you can most likely keep the older control arms and swap over the spindles/brakes, etc.

Also, the mating points for the control arms with the frame appears the same as well. So you could swap over the entire control arms to upgrade to bolt in ball joints, two piston brakes, etc.

I have not proven this yet, but I will be experimenting soon. I've had both right next to each other and I see no reason why it shouldn't work.


So, good cheap upgrade for the 2wd guys if this proves to work. I'll keep ya'll posted!

They don't have rack and pinion. They still have a steering box. They didn't go to rack and pinion until the Gen 3 trucks.

Someone else posted a wrong pic that I looked at then. Claimed it was a 2001 and showed a rack. So much for trusting people on the internet.
