Sloppy stealing

Hey guys, I have a 98ram 4x4 that I am using for a plow truck. There is a lot of play in the steering wheel. Could this be bad tie rods, or a bad steering gear box or both? Truck has about 208,000 miles on it and was a plow truck for only a few years before I got it. Everything on the truck is stock as at as I can tell. Any thoughts on where I should start?

Thanks for the help.

i have a 2001 and i had the same problem seering was jacked up bad by the previous owner i have replaced the entire steering system

a good way to find out is pop the hood and reach down and grab the steering rod going into the steering gear box fron the steering wheel and giggle it and try turning it by hand if you are able to do that and there is lot of play in it your gear box is bad.

I tried that and ther is no play in the steering rod to the gear box. Tie rods maybe?

So I am not thinking maybe it is bad ball joints? at about 30 mph I hear grinding coming from the front end. It is not has bad when the plow is off but it is still there. The steering wheel is at about 2 o clock when I go down the road straight. So I would guess maybe ball joints and tie rods. I think the steering gear box is ok since I can not move the steering rod at all. Anyone have any thoughts? I am thinking if I have to replace this stuff I may as well but some heavy duty stuff in there to help with the weight of the plow. Your thoughts?
