Knocking in the Turns
I have a 96 1500 4x4 and a couple weeks back I noticed a slight knock coming from the left wheel when I'm making a right turn. It seemed to only start knocking only when the wheel was past a 1/4 turn and I was doing over 10 mph. It's progressively gotten worse and after reading a couple other threads it seems to me like it may be a bad u joint.

What I'm asking is whether or not my prediction is actually correct or is it a ball joint or wheel bearing and also if anyone has had this same prob;em and how you've went about fixing it.

You're on it, probably not a ball joint, but very likely a u-joint or bearing. Safely jack up that left front corner. Grab the wheel at top and bottom and move it in and out. If it moves, do it side to side. If you have play both ways, the bearing is bad. If there's no play, stick a long pry bar under the tire and lift. If theres movement, ball joints. Remove the wheel, and rotate the hub back & forth so the axle turns. You might be able to see play in the joint, but you may have to reach in and feel it. AND...if the bearing is so bad it's knocking, make sure you check the u joint, they will damage one another.

I'll make sure to report back with any findings when I get time to do it. Thanks you for the response.

Crawl under the truck and see if you can move the u joint by hand. Mine was really loose on the passenger side and made a whooshing noise in tight low speed turns. When my hub went bad, it made a screeching noise. My ball joints made popping noises in tight turns. These noises may not be typical, but may give you an idea.

U joints and hubs are pretty easy to replace.

I would say mine is making a clunk/knock or possibly a pop like you were saying persuader. I've definitely been stumped with the diagnosis from just the noise.

Replace that axle joint soon, or it will cost you an entire axle halfshaft, and avoid sharp turns, the joint WILL fail completely, soon, and wipe out the yokes on the stub and half shaft. Then you're talking real money, instead of $20
