2013 "so called" 6 speed auto

Read an article where they called the 6 speed in the Ram a "so called" 6 speed auto, but really it's a 5 speed unless you "manually" select ( I assume) first gear. Stating that the first gear ratio when not manually selected is really like a 2nd gear and that's why the Ram doesn't have great off the line acceleration.

Is this true and why (other than for better fuel economy) would Dodge do that?

I saw a post on here where someone explained it but can't find it atm.

They said that 3rd gear is only used on a downshift or when manual shifting, but that could be complete bs. :4-dontknow:

Yes, the 6 speeds only use 5 gears at a time. During normal operation they skip 3rd gear. In tow/haul mode they don't go into 6th. But like you said they can be used by manually selecting the gear.

what you heard or read is that the 545 RFE & the 65RFE transmissions are really 4 speed transmissions
anything above 4th gear is Electronic
the first transmission of this type was the 45RFE, it came in 1998 Jeep vehicles

RFE means: Rear wheel drive, Fully Electronic

find a Ram with the ZF 8 speed, HEMI engine, choose between the differential ratios of 3.21, 3.55, 3.92 , depending on whether you tow or not
get the Limited slip differential if you live where it snows or is mostly muddy

choose your RADIO only after you research it carefully

Hits 3rd on downshifts, if you don't believe me start in manual 1 and shift up through. It'll shift into 2nd but not shift again until you hit 4th, but if you shift from 4th down to 3rd it will actually shift into 3rd lol if that isn't confussing for you.

So what are you getting at? Nobody said squat about them when they were the only tranny but now that we have an 8 speed......

RAM SPORT CREW 05-03-2013 08:08 PM

Lots or people talked about how it's not a true 6 speed, I knew thus when i bought my 2012 last June. it works fine for me, just stating the facts

bigralphy 05-03-2013 08:22 PM

It's not that bad of a tranny but shouldn't be advertised as a 6 speed

snrusnak 05-03-2013 09:06 PM

the 545rfe/65rfe transmission both have 6 forward gears but skip the 3rd gear unless in tow/haul mode(also locks out 6th). It also uses the 3rd gear on downshifts. The only othe way to use all 6 gears is to use ERS("manual") mode on 4th gen trucks.

The 2nd and 3rd gears are nearly identical in ratio, so there's not really a benefit to using all 6 in normal driving.

The 8 speed was my plan, but Dodge said they would be available "by end of Q1 2013"?
Well, that would mean end of March.
Couldn't find one.
And can hardly find one NOW. Actually, since I don't need a 4x4, apparently we CAN'T even get the 8 speed in a 4x2 yet?

By researching the radio, are you referring to issues with the 8.4 inch screen?

I was beginning to consider a 2013 with the 6 (or 5?) speed gear box instead then, since they will be discounted more.
But it seems ridiculous to me that it supposedly have 6 forward gears but only uses 5 in normal operation?
