Fix for 3rd gen (and maybe older) power seat issues, fairly cheap or maybe free
So I posted a thread a while back about my power driver seat being broken. On mine, the front to back horizontal slider works and the rear vertical adjustment works but the front vertical adjustment does not. The motor works like hell but nothing happens. After a little research, it appears that this is a somewhat common problem so I wanted to share some info that I found.
First off, this mainly applies to the third gen trucks. I mentioned maybe older in my thread because this site sells parts for older Ram as well.
The proper, fairly cheap route:
If you have this problem, it's most likely due to a small plastic gear inside the seat motor. The gear strips and then there is no connection between the motor and the rod that turns to adjust the seat. The motors are not really meant to be replaced. The dealer will sell you the entire seat base with all new motors as one piece. I have seen prices from $300-500. This site sells the motors individually for $60-90 each. They also sell replacement gear kits and have some pretty good directions on how to remove the motors, crack them open, and replace the gear. The site is here.
My attempt at free fix:
I just wanted to share that info for anyone looking to fix their power seat. My front vertical adjustment is stuck at the lowest setting. I may end up buying a replacement motor but before I do I am going to try a free fix. If it works like I hope, it will allow me to move the front vertical adjustment and lock it there, however, it will not be adjustable after reassembly. I am going to remove the seat motor and try to manually adjust the tube nut and then reinstall it. If you aren't familiar with how the seat functions, look here.
Basically I am going to go through step 5 and then stop. Instead of removing the tube nut, I am going to adjust it to lengthen it which is what the motor would do if it were working in order to raise the seat. If it works, I hope I can reinstall the assembly and the seat will stay in the higher position. As I said, of course, it won't be adjustable but at least it won't be sitting go-cart low anymore. Anyone see any issues with this? I will update when I get time to try it. It may be a few days.
That's handy, thanks
I still haven't made it around to this. The seat is a tad harder to get out than I anticipated. Not harder really but it seems that the entire front seat section has to be unbolted as one piece? Anyway, it's still on my to-do list (along with 346 other things) and I will update whenever it finally gets done.
