Hairline Crack, Repair?
I have 5 KMC Rockstars. (20", black, 5 on 5.5....)
The extra is for a spare. While in the desert earlier last year, I aired down the tires while stuck in a huge sand dune area and got out. But I realized I needed to go to the gas station to air up, as my compressor had ceased working. So I made the trip 1.5 miles slowly but hit a pothole with 1 wheel and put a hairline crack in it. I didn't find the slow leak until 200 miles later, and I had to use a tub of soapy water to find the crack.
Now its my spare.
Can it be repaired by anyone?
A shop off of Craigslist offered for 90 bucks, but I first wanted to check that it was possible to fix and it was safe to fix.
Thanks for any help.
I might just replace?
Here in Minnesota they can't be legally fixed. It probably takes a very specialized set of tools and know how anyway. I wouldn't trust it to a local shop that is willing "to give it a try". If they specialize in these types of repairs it might be a different story. You might need to bite the bullet and just get a new one.
A buddy of mine had a leak in his tire. He brought it to a normal repair shop and they told him the rim was bent. They beat it back in to shape. A few weeks later he brought his car to a tire shop to get new tires. They told him all his rims were bent. He said just bend them back. The tire shop refused and told him it was illegal as well as dangerous.
take it to a weld shop and have them grind in a v channel and weld it back up... put the tire on and check for leaks,., then take it to get balanced....i had to do that to my vw cc ... damn low profile tires... but YES IT CAN BE DONE. over all cost me 100.00 bucks including the gas back and forth.
