Transmission Question on my 1994 1500

The transmission went out on my 1994 Dodge Ram - it is the 3 speed automatic with that overdrive button on the dash. Took it to the guy who does all my families cars and he is having very hard time finding this tranny. He sd Dodge made only it 2 years 94 and 95 and then they used a different one from 96 - 07 - we found one that had 60,000 mile on it - he installed it - lasted 64 miles and 3rd went out - covered under warranty another week goes by and no transmission. He sd this model cant be rebuilt because the case not the internals gets damaged by the fragments in the fluid and cant be re-used. He sd you can't find a good case anywhere.

Is there any other transmission that will install in a 94 Dodge Ram - 2 wheel drive with the 5.9 liter? He says no - appreciate any suggestions.

If memory serves me correctly...the 46RE (electronic overdrive) is a 94/95 only because of the difference in the transfer case mouting...however I'm pretty sure the 96/97 will work if you change it as a complete unit including the transfer case.

You can easily verify this by checking the interchange for a 2wd transmission against a 4wd. The 2wd interchanges up to 2000 the only difference being the transfer case, so I'm about 75% sure it will work up to 2000 as a complete unit.

(CRAP) Edit: I thought your's was a 4x4.

If you're having trouble locating one check Car-Part.com It's the same as a full size van but it is year specific.

HI Bubba, fng P7man here, I own a 1995 and had a rebuilt put in here in Vegas and shes ran great every since. I am so sorry loosing 3 trannies is frustrating. But my mechanic is really a tour bus mobile kinda guy and I could give the number for his shop here and maybe he and your mechanic can talk shop and find one for you? have it dropped shipped? Let me know k? have a nice day.

The '94-'95 is the 46RH. The original version is the A-518, first used in 1989. In 1993 is was renamed 46RH and received a lockup torque converter. There are minor differences in the case. You cannot use a 46RE due to it being fully electronic, the RH has a hydraulic valve body. The guts of these transmissions (the front three gearsets) can trace itself all the way back to the first 727 torqueflites of the 1960's. A rebuild kit can be had fir under $200. Hard parts like drums etc are commonly available and cheap.
