Fiat questioning Dodge brand's future?

"Whatever is going on behind the scenes at Fiat-Chrysler, including the possibility of further culling, or even getting rid of the Dodge brand, expect the string of news-making announcements that began when Fiat took a stake in Chrysler four years ago to continue. But 2016 looks like the year all the pieces will more-or-less be in place."

I guess this explains a little bit of why they broke out Ram Trucks from the rest of Dodge, but I can't see Dodge going away completely.

Interesting read. But I agree with you, I can't see Dodge going away completely. If they did that would be a HUGE mistake!! Getting rid of a huge name brand that has been around for over 100 years doesn't make any sense at all.

I agree completely with this. Dodge is the most popular brand of all of the company. Guess it is similar to what GM did with Pontiac and olds.

The last 2 years of Oldsmobile was their best sales ever! Remember how before the bailouts GM was trying to buy out Chrysler?

I hope dodge stays

I don't see that happening at all. Why would the put all the money into make and designing the dart and Cuda just to get ride of the brand?

Not really a Ram thing, but Dodge brand being killed by 2016?

Pure speculation. Some of these online "rags" need to come up with something to write each day and therein lies some of the problems with articles like this. Not to mention the spelling errors. ;-)

The author makes a case for product line aggregation (Plymouth went away, as with GM's Pontiac & Oldsmobile line aggregation with other lines picking up the slack because the platforms were the same) but fails to support how a diverse platform selection can be assimilated by other product lines.

Surely the Ram carried Dodge for quite some time and without Ram in the Dodge picture, it appears weak and unappealing. But two Dodge platforms need some consideration, that being the LX (Charger) and LY (Challenger) models which are unique to the CJD lines. Those two cars do have their following and do sell so CJD needs to decide how to rebrand or continue those two platforms.

Many folks who remember the Barracuda (or the 'Cuda as it was known) have an objection to resurrecting that particular name as it was a Plymouth, which we all know is a brand that no longer exists.

Not that any of that matters to Fiat...

There is already a thread about this in the automotive news section I will merge this th read with that one to keep just one open thread on the topic.

If hate to see it happen but it's completely feasible. No one thought GM could kill off Pontiac, "it's the performance brand" but they did.

The article does mention the idea of an SRT brand; maybe they keep the Dodge brand for just the high end performance models (Viper etc.). Face it, if you're buying a mini van do you really care if its a Chrysler or Dodge badge?
