Towing + No Brakes = Hiroshima!!
I haul my 20ft bay boat around quite often, and usually use this one ramp on base that's real close to my house. The ramp is pretty steep but convenient enough because of it's location. Last weekend I hit the road early to get my morning fishing on and as I was reversing to the ramp my brakes go out. Luckily, I put it in drive and was able to make it out before I hit the water.

After some diagnosing, I realized that my combination valve's pin was stuck out, and by the looks of it wasn't going to be easy to reset (Rust). I hit the junkyard for a new combination valve after weeks of trying to find an OEM replacement and I got lucky finding an 89 Ramcharger. I got a good deal for $2 because apparently the guy at the counter didn’t have a clue to what it was. Installed it and no luck again...

So I decided to buy a new aftermarket one from Summit Racing: Classic Performance Brake Proportioning Valve, P/N: PV-2. It is identical in every way to the original configuration and it also bolts right up to the original bracket. The only thing I had to swap was the warning light switch. For only $45 I would definitely recommend this to anyone still dealing with their old steel combination valve on their second generation.

when was the last time you changed your brake fluid? i have never had an issue with the proportioning valves on any of my trucks.

I checked it about five months ago when I first got the truck..

but have you actually changed it? up here in the land of rust we usually replace our brake lines about every 10 years and with doing that we have no choice but to change all the fluid. over time brake fluid absorbs water. water will create rust even if it is to the parts inside the brake lines. i think even at one point in time they recommended changing the brake fluid every 2 years because of this.

Yea, I definately know about rust, it's pretty common killer over here by the coast. I ended up replacing all of my lines because they were too corroded.

Towing: Using the "Gain Adjustment" power output
RE: Integrated Trailer Brake Controller - How to set & vary the "Gain Adjustment" power output under varying road conditions.

First, I’m a first time truck owner as of 2 weeks ago purchasing the RAM 1500 SLT Crew Cab 4x4, V8 Hemi, towing package, with Integrated Brake Controller.

Second, “We” just purchased our first travel trailer (Denali 246RK) and will pick up this Friday (June 28th).

Question: What power output settings (+ or -) are made with the “Gain Adjustment” under varying road conditions? Is there a setting or range for towing on level road, a different range/setting going down a 8% grade hill vs 15% grade, or going the opposite uphill? Or, is it done all automatically?

Question: Is this correct? I first hook up the trailer, drive on a level road at 25 mph, and manually squeeze slowly (?) the Gain Adjustment lever using no truck brakes, and the brake controller will automatically stop the trailer, w/o squealing the tires. Then, the brake controller will display the correct setting to use? Again, that number would be for a level road. I’m more confused by any adjustments to be made under different road conditions.

This is all new to me!
