1995 Dodge Ram 2500 V10 newbie info requested
 
A fella I know has a 1995 Dodge Ram 2500 with the Magnum v10 engine in it, backed up to a NV4500 manual transmission, and Dana 60/80 axle combo.

I had a 1997 Ram 1500 with the 5.2 magnum, nv3500 trans, and 38 inch tires, but I sold it because I wasnt impressed with the engine, and the front axle ate wheel bearings with the big swampers.

I have missed my 1500 since I sold it, but dont want another 1500 model. I am hoping that this 2500 will fit the bill. I need to know if the V10 is problematic, has any issues that are expensive to repair, etc etc...

I know the V10 is supposed to get 8-11 MPG, I am comfortable with the Dana 60/80 axles and the NV4500HD manual transmission. I mainly need the lowdown on the V10. I cant afford a diesel truck, and I am hoping to hear positive feedback on this V10 engine.

Here is my old truck, which reminds me. The 2500 V10 i want is a standard cab long bed which is what I want.

Nice truck. I have a 96' V10. I love mine. I also love the fact I can do my own diagnostics using the ignition and I really love the power. I got on it (started in 2nd) and roasted the tires. Then I shifted into third, it got sideways while still roasting the tires. Note: This is a 12,000 lb vehicle, you do not expect it to do burn outs, let alone get sideways with a locker in the rear and dually rear tires, while in 3rd gear. I love mine!

BTW, with a $20 resistor style "computer" I went from just under 10 mpg to just over 12 mpg. Only a little over 6 mpg towing my 40' 5th wheel camper.

Why not get a regular cab 12V Cummins? Cheap, reliable and good fuel economy. Only real issue is the killer dowel pin.

Have you found any Cummins 12v trucks for 6k that dont have 250k miles on them lately? Especially hard to find with a manual trans

I found out that the lift kit was a home made setup. The previous owner did a leaf spring conversion on the front end. That kinda sours me a little on the deal because I didnt wanna have to deal with checking over somebodys fab work.

Coils are a much better set up. Why would he go leaf springs? You should be able to go to a wrecking yard and pick up replacements. I am not big on off road tires for mine, I use it to tow. Also, a lot less hard wear on the steering arms/ball joints and such with stock tires. Even aftermarket lifted springs would be better than that. Was there a reason?

I dunno if there was any good reason, but this factor alone kept me from buying it. I let it go to the next buyer in line, I feel confident I made the right decision. I dont have a full service auto shop to work out of anymore, so I cant take on fab work anymore.

Thanks for the great info on this model of truck, I will keep an eye out for a low mileage unmolested example.

If it makes you feel any better, I got my truck for less than $8,000. I was impressed with the price as well as performance. Worth every penny!
